Purebred Dog Adoption

There are misconceptions about dog adoption, with a major one being that all shelter and homeless dogs are not purebreds, just mixed breeds. Experts have estimated that 25 percent of dogs in shelters are in fact purebred, so there are adoption opportunities for those seeking a specific breed or purebred dogs. Popular breeds such as German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, Boxers, Chihuahuas and many other purebred dogs can end up in shelters or with rescue groups for a variety reasons. While not always a guarantee, selecting a purebred dog can allow you a better guess at size, temperament and personality traits that are characteristic to one breed or another.  If you are seeking a purebred dog and are willing to open your heart to an adopted dog, you can check your local shelter, adoption groups, and breed rescue groups.

Mixed Breed Adoption

These dogs make wonderful pets and there are many mixed-breeds in shelters. Experts have estimated that 75 percent of dogs in shelters are in fact mixed breeds. While you may not be able to determine by looking at a young dog what size or activity level they will be, the one thing you can count on is a unique dog that will be full of surprises. Mixed Breeds range in combinations from the cross breeding of two purebred dogs such as a Maltese-Poodle to multi-generation mutts whose origins are unclear. Depending on the parents, mixed breeds range in size, shape, color and personality. When searching for a dog to adopt you are sure to be able to find a mix who suits your family and lifestyle.
