The American English Coonhound is derived from a combination of English Coonhounds brought to the New World by wealthy English land owners and Virginia Hounds, which had arrived with earlier settlers and were more adept at traversing rough terrain and harsher weather. Bloodhounds were also introduced into its heritage to increase its sense of smell. The breed is renowned for its stamina, speed, loud bawl and muscular build. Many regard it as the quintessential hunting companion, as it still retains a strong instinct for trailing raccoon, fox and other game as it was originally intended. The breed is affectionate and friendly, but fearless and energetic, so regular exercise is a must. It is eager to please and generally easy to train. The short, hard coat can suffice with weekly brushing and bathing as needed. .
