The Dog Beautiful is an appropriate nickname for this breed, which has a thick, snow-white coat, erect ears and a plumed tail, as well as the square build and wedge-shaped head that mark it as a member of the spitz family. This descendant of the German Spitz acquired the name American Eskimo in 1913, when the United Kennel Club recognized it. In 1969, a national club was formed to preserve and promote the breed, and in the last 15 years the Eskie has enjoyed a burst of popularity, leading to its recognition by the American Kennel Club in 1996. The Eskie is a member of the AKC's Non-Sporting Group and is divided into three sizes: toy, miniature and standard. In any size, this is an energetic, alert and loyal dog that takes its status as a watchdog seriously. It's protective of its home and family and can be aggressive toward strangers. Training should be firm and consistent. Never underestimate the intelligence beneath the beautiful exterior; this dog will infinitely test an owner's patience and creativity. Like most double-coated dogs, the American Eskimo sheds heavily and requires brushing about three times a week. It fits well into any size living quarters and enjoys a daily walk or two.
