About me
Few people see the pet world from the perspective I enjoy on a daily basis. Recently I have been buried in rubble and then "rescued'' by disaster search dogs. I attended a graduation ceremony at a juvenile detention center where kids are duplicating the success of prison dog programs, saving themselves and rescuing shelter dogs.

Regularly I interview and write about the nation's most innovative rescue advocates and talk to top animal researchers, innovative product makers and leading trainers, and lots of everyday pet owners. Many of these experiences I share with you in my online column, Editor Off Leash.

At the same time I see this world on a personal, up-close basis, especially due to my rescue and volunteer work. The very first thing pet people want to know is: What kind of dogs do you have?

I have two dogs, Gordon, 5, and Munchkin, 13, both Cairn Terriers. When people ask what they are I just say “Toto dogs,’’ and they know right away. Thank goodness for Toto.

My wife and I volunteer as officers with the Cairn Terrier Club of Southern California, helping to put on dog shows, and staffing “meet the breed” and pet fair booths.

For 15 years we have been active in all facets of terrier rescue, for both purebred Cairns and mixed breeds. Seven years ago we also started volunteering with Greyhound rescue and volunteer at a local shelter every week.

Three years ago we got our younger terrier, Gordon, certified as a therapy dog. We have now made more than 250 hospital visits with Gordon. Each week he comforts the sick, the injuried and those who just need their spirits lifted.

Working with rescue dogs and doing therapy dog work is the most life-affirming experience I have ever had. From the show ring to the shelter, dogs and dog people have enriched my life.

During a lifelong career in journalism, at top metropolitan newspapers and magazines, I have been fortunate to earn a number of awards and honors:

*Core member of a reporting team awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Reporting
*Scripps Howard National Journalism Award for Public Service
*Sigma Delta Chi Award in Journalism
*Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) for Outstanding Investigative Reporting
*Top Business Reporting Award, Orange County Press Club
*Top Public Service Reporting Award, Orange County Press Club

Throughout my life with dogs I have learned much from other dog owners, from websites such as DogChannel, and from publications such as DOG FANCY, which is devoted to the care and enjoyment of all dogs, purebreds and Mixed Breeds alike.

Whether you are interested in dog training, health, behavior, grooming or fun activities, I invite you to share in the conversation and learning experience that is at the heart of DOG FANCY magazine and Our goal is to educate, enlighten and entertain dog owners, and together become the owners our furry best friends deserve.
