A lively dog developed in France for hunting rabbits and hare, the Basset Fauve de Bretagne is known for its well-developed scent-tracking skills, courage and friendly nature. Derived from the Griffon Fauve de Bretagne in the 1700s, the Basset Fauve had nearly vanished by the end of World War II. By breeding selected Bassets Griffons Vendeen and Standard Wirehaired Dachshunds with the few remaining Fauves, fanciers revived the breed. The modern Fauve retains its speed, dexterity and keen sense of smell, making it a good choice for agility, tracking and obedience competition. Daily exercise is a must for this affectionate breed that loves a lap just as much as a hunt. Great with kids, the Fauve makes a wonderful family dog.
