Bull Terrier DOG PROFILE

Originally called the Bull and Terrier, this British breed represents a cross between the Bulldog and the now extinct White English Terrier. Bull Terriers are friends to all, but because their first job was that of pit fighter, their feisty instincts die hard. It's best to begin training early and establish the upper hand. The Bull Terrier is a heavyset dog with a light, jaunty trot and a clownish personality. It's fond of children and makes a fine family pet for almost any size home. Its exercise needs are moderate, and its short, close-lying coat (in pure white or colored with white markings) sheds little and needs only a weekly brushing. These dogs suffer from hives occasionally, possibly an allergic reaction to some foods, insect bites or pollen. Owners are advised to follow the breeder's feeding instructions to the letter. Popularized by advertising campaigns featuring Spuds MacKenzie, the Bull Terrier can be a charming companion and excellent watchdog.
