What's this?
Once believed to be a good-luck charm, the Chinese Foo Dog has also been called the Sacred Dog of Sinkiang, Chinese Temple Forest Dog and Chinese Celestial Dog. A northern-style breed, the Chinese Foo Dog displays the spitz's typical thick coat, triangular face, prick ears, muscular body and curled tail along with abundant energy, hardiness, independence and strength. Like other Asian breeds, this breed sometimes has a blue-black tongue and mouth. The CFD comes in three sizes: toy (10 inches or shorter), miniature (taller than 10 inches to 15 inches), and standard (taller than 15 inches). Its hard, double, weather-resistant coat may be Plush (short) or Rough (long) in shades and combinations of black, brown, blue, fawn, red, sable, wolf gray and silver. This quiet, dignified companion and protector accepts friends of the family, but is wary of strangers. A multi-purpose dog bred for herding, hunting, watchdog, sledding and companionship, the CFD still leads a double life, claiming its ancient right to snuggle with the children at night.
