Alabama Gang/Please vote us (#43042) DOTM in June!! Wonderful Wednesday! Hello everyone! Let's see today how about Miss Prissy Maybelle Jones...Prissy is 8 years old and she is something else! She has food aggression. She has to get the most and she has to be first. She barks the loudest, runs the fastest and one time she killed a fawn which made mommy very mad! She's sweet and loving but well she's spoiled!Anyway one day Prissy came up missing Daddy yelled and yelled for Prissy to come but she never came. He got on the 4 wheeler and rode in the woods still no Prissy. He called mommy at work she got very upset. All the dogs helped daddy look for Prissy. Daddy thought she must have been bitten by a timber rattler or copperhead. He drove around calling Prissy but nothing. He kept trying to think of where she could be. Then he remembered the last time he had seen her was in the cat house. Our cat, little milkshake lives in the workshop in the back yard. She used to live with us in the garage until Prissy started eating her food. Then daddy started feeding her in his workshop and he put in a kitty door so milkshake can go in and out.So Daddy went out to the workshop the kitty door flap was lying on the ground and the hole was bigger. Daddy heard loud gnawing the closer he got. He opened the door and Prissy jumped up. She had gotten locked in and was gnawing her way out. Daddy asked Prissy why she didn't bark when he called her. She looked at Daddy wagging her tail. Daddy said she looked like she was laughing! Love ya!

Alabama Gang/Please vote us (#43042) DOTM in June!! Hey, it's a terrific Tuesday! For today's story we need to go back to 2008. Grandpa had moved in with us in the summer.Mommy and Daddy both worked second shift which was 3pm until 11pm.Daddy left at 2:15pm..Mommy left at 2:30pm.Which meant it was just grandpa,Poochie.Ruff and Miss Lady.Mommy would fix grandpa's supper before she left for work unless it was Friday that was cheeseburger day.Mommy would call Daddy each night around 7pm to check on us. One night the phone rang and rang. Mommy called 3 times before grandpa answered. "Daddy is something wrong?" "No well yeah I can't find my teeth." "We ate supper." "Who's we?" Mommy asked. "I mean I ate supper.I remember taking my teeth out and laying them on the table by my recliner. I went to the bathroom then came back, but now I can't find my teeth"grandpa answered. When mommy got home at 11:30pm grandpa was still looking...mommy helped him but no teeth. Finally mommy came into the den where Poochie was sitting on his favorite rug in front of the TV. Mommy stopped, there was little white things laying on the rug. "Poochie what's on the rug?"Mommy kept looking as Poochie ate one of the white things."OMG!! Poochie that's Daddy's teeth!" "You're gonna die!" Mommy grabbed Poochie and ran crying to grandpa. About that time Daddy came in.Daddy almost wet his pants from laughing! I think grandpa did a little and mommy was so upset. The next morning mommy called the vet first thing.Poochie passed 5 of grandpa's teeth with no harm.Grandpa had to get new teeth and he never left them on his table by the recliner anymore! In June 2014 an article about grandpa's teeth was in Dog Fancy making Poochie a celebrity! Also in 2011 Poochie was Mr. December in the Caring Hands Humane Society calendar

Alabama Gang/Please vote us (#43042) DOTM in June!! Happy Monday everyone! I hope we're not boring you with our stories. The one that comes to mind today is about Miss Lady and the copperhead. It would have been in either July or August after Ruff passed. Mommy,Daddy,Poochie,Bubba and Miss Lady were walking in the lower pasture. Now none of us like snakes. No way! Miss Lady loved Daddy...we all do but Miss Lady especially.Well this morning Mommy screamed, good thing she did to because there right beside Daddy was a big copperhead! Daddy jumped out of the way when the snake tried to bite him. But ole Mr. copperhead tried and that made Miss Lady mad! She ran up to the snake. When he tried to bite her she jumped in behind him and grabbed his tail. She then began hitting him on the ground. Mommy and Daddy were afraid he'd bite her but she was great! Poor snake didn't stand a chance. Lady showed him! Love ya! PS: Thanks to Angel Lita for vote 43,100!

Alabama Gang/Please vote us (#43042) DOTM in June!! Hi! Day 26 of our DOTM run. Today, Ruff has been gone 6 years. We've already told you a lot about Ruff, our beautiful, gentle giant.Mommy always thought he had been shot at. He'd run if mommy tried to take his picture and he was so afraid of thunder or any loud noise. He was a sweetheart though. We love you Mr. Ruff Stuff!! Today we have another story. Not a Skunk this time...a Squirrel. There are a lot of squirrels out here. When Poochie was a puppy he began chasing squirrels so did Miss Lady. If mommy & daddy went out in the woods & they started getting away from them mommy or daddy would yell squirrel! They would run back to them barking...looking for the squirrel. Before we moved out here mommy would walk Poochie on a leash and he'd pull and pull until she'd let go of the leash he loved chasing squirrels. He loved chasing anything. One time he found a little mole just a baby. Mommy yelled at Poochie to leave the baby mole alne. He swallowed it. He had to go to the vet. Everything was alright. One day mommy was going to take him for a walk. She was getting his leash when she heard Poochie barking at the front door. She looked out. Nothing, he kept barking. Mommy started looking up & down the street through the glass in the door. She looked to the right there was a squirrel sitting on the ledge on the porch looking at Poochie barking" at him. Poochie kept barking so did the squirrel. Mommy & grandpa laughed so hard. They looked like they were arguing. Guess Mr. squirrel didn't like being chased by Poochie! Precious memories!Have a great day! Love ya!

Alabama Gang/Please vote us (#43042) DOTM in June!! Hi! It's Saturday again. Mommy is working she'll get back with y'all when she gets home tonight. Back in 2009. Daddy started cleaning off the back pasture. He then made this huge stack of limbs to make a huge fire. You know how dogs noses are...nothing gets past our noses! The large daddy had stacked up...a critter of some kind was in it. We went crazy barking. Miss Lady was really having a fit. She jumped in then yelled, jumping out! The smell was awful! We had never smelled anything that awful! We ran but we couldn't get away from the odor. Daddy said it was a skunk! We were all given a bath then 2 baths in tomato juice then another bath. We smelt better but Oh Lord! We tried our best to stay away from those skunks! To many bath's!4 in one day! No way! Love ya!

Alabama Gang/Please vote us (#43042) DOTM in June!! Hi everyone! Day #24 hard to believe it's almost over. Please let's remember Riley & Jasmine's family. Saying goodbye to our fur babies is one of the hardest things we do.I guess because they bring so much joy in our lives. I remember good times like when Mommy's Dad came to live with us. He loved cheeseburgers!Every Friday morning Daddy would go to town Grandpa always went. They'd go to the bank...dollar store and then Jack's to go cheeseburgers! One Friday they went to town and since Mommy & Daddy were both working second shift at the time he brought a second cheeseburger and it was wrapped up on a table in Grandpa's bedroom. Or front porch had bannisters and a front gate on it. Sometimes Mommy would let Miss Lady & Ruff in through the back door and we'd all sit on the front porch. Mommy did that after eating lunch.Ruff as usual went back in the house...prowling around. Later around 6pm Grandpa called Mommy at work. "Did you eat my cheeseburger?" "No mommy told him." "It's gone." Grandpa screamed. He ended up eating a peanut sandwich. But what happened to the cheeseburger. The next morning Mommy & Poochie were outside with Ruff & Miss Lady. Guess what Poochie found? Jack's cheeseburger wrappers! It was easy to figure out what happened yesterday after lunch Mommy let Miss Lady & Ruff in. Miss Lady ran to the porch and sit down. Ruff stayed in the house he must have grabbed the cheeseburger & took it outside then came back inside. After they were put back in the fenced yard. Ruff had cheeseburger! The mystery of the Cheeseburger bandit was solved! PS: Happy Birthday Ruger #188488!! ALERT! This morning we blog & Voted: Now we can't blog. Even if you don't get a blog from us we will vote for you! Love ya!

Alabama Gang/Please vote us (#43042) DOTM in June!! Hi! I hope DC behaves today! We feel we need to tell you something that happened in November of 2009. Mommy was working & Daddy was working to..on our house. We had just been in our new house a little over a month. WE now had 30 acres of land. That was good but it wasn't all good. The house was horrible and the land was all grown up. Bubba & Ruff loved chasing the deer and all the little critters. Every morning they were gone until around 9 or 10. But one morning it was a Saturday they didn't come home. Mommy & Daddy looked all day for them. Late that afternoon Ruff came home but no Bubba. After a week still no Bubba. They had put up posters at the store & post office. Mommy & Daddy kept looking & praying. One day the store called...a man had seen Bubba. He took them where he last saw Bubba. They looked & looked called & called but no Bubba.Mommy couldn't sleep that night she prayed & prayed for him. That morning mommy heard that sweet voice that seems to come from your heart telling her to go back to yesterday. She jumped up & told Daddy she'd be back with Bubba. She drove where the man had taken them...nothing...she finally got back in her car & cried. Then she heard it again drive a little further....she drove then she heard turn up the next way. There to her left was a driveway. She slowly followed in up a hill. Cars parked. She still saw nothing then she heard get out take Bubba home. Mommy got out of the car. She then walked towards the cars. When she got in front of the parked cars. There stood a dirty, skinny Bubba. He ran to her & she carried him home! Bubba never left again. He was 12 miles from home. But Mommy didn't find Bubba......he wasn't lost! Jesus knew exactly where he was the whole time! This is a true story! Jesus loves humans & fur babies! Love ya! PS: Thanks to Wilbur Knight for vote #43,000?

Alabama Gang/Please vote us (#43042) DOTM in June!! Now, we've spent the past 15 days introducing you to us. There's been quite a parade of dogs through our home. There are 4 of us now. Little Buddy the 14 or will be 14 sometime this year, white Chihuahua,Bubba the basset hound who is now 12,Prissy Maybelle who is 8, she is part pitbull and Chow Chow. Precious who is 4,she is a border terrier. Little Buddy is a house dog (most of the time). The other 3 live outside. Little Buddy and Bubba no longer play. Prissy plays sometimes. Precious can't play enough.Prissy and Precious love to chase Squirrels. Little Buddy chases our cat, Little Milkshake whenever no one is looking and the Alabama Gang all love to eat! Poochie was our leader. Bubba was going to take over when he passed but that lasted maybe 2 days. There is no real leader right now. But that's okay, everyone gets along well. WE live kinda off to ourselves on 30 acres which we love. At nights the Coyotes howl and we bark back at them.I guess we're country dogs or we are now. We're all rescues who have been lonely and we've been hungry, scared and unwanted. But things are much better now.We also love Dog Channel and all our friends!

Alabama Gang/Please vote us (#43042) DOTM in June!! Harry didn't stay but about two weeks. Skipper died on Saturday night May 14th. Sunday morning early Daddy got up and buried Skipper. After he had finished he heard something coming out of the woods. There stood Harry. Harry is a beautiful young Beagle (less than a year old). He ran to Daddy and then ran back in the woods. Mommy and Daddy tried to find Harry's owner but was unable to. There was only one thing wrong with Harry...he chased our cat....Little Milkshake that's a no no. Each morning Harry would run in the woods trailing things. A man who lives in behind us wanted Harry. So we gave Harry to him. But his brother fell in love with Harry. Harry now lives with him. There are 8 other Beagles that live with Harry so he has plenty doggies to play with. But best of all Harry gets to hunt! He's a hunter who gets to hunt and play till his hearts content! Harry wasn't with us long but his story has a very happy ending! Harry is a much loved puppy!!! PS: Thanks Angel Taylonnie for vote 42,900!!

Alabama Gang/Please vote us (#43042) DOTM in June!! Skipper was born in 2006. A red and white Pomeranian. He was a beautiful little dog. Poochie had been gone a month when my brother in law told us about him. "I feel so sorry for him. He's alone in that big old house night and day." His owner can't stay by himself anymore and they have dogs and can't keep Skipper to. Mommy felt so bad for the little dog. "He can live with us" mommy said. The next day he called and Skippers owner said yes Skipper come live with them. But then he said Skipper had been passing out.The next day Skipper came to live with the gang. Bubba ran up to Skipper wagging his tail , Skipper growled. Bubba bite at Skipper. Skipper's eye came out of socket.Skipper then passed out. The Vet put Skipper's eye back in & checked Skipper"No he's been passing out along time. He has Congestive heart failure," Skipper also had a very infected mouth. He had 7 teeth pulled.Skipper was on medicine for congestive heart failure. Then his medicine dose was upped. Skipper would bite if anyone tried to pet him. He growled to. But if you would put your hand down & be still he'd rub his little head over your hand. At least Skipper knew he was loved before he passed. He died on May 14th of Congestive heart failure. Four years earlier on May 14th Miss Lady had died. Skipper is buried next to Miss Lady.Skipper our beautiful little guy whom we only had a short time but whom we'll love forever!

Alabama Gang/Please vote us (#43042) DOTM in June!! Summer 2015, everything was going fine. Except for the large tumor on Poochie's right side at his back leg. The vet didn't want to remove it because of Poochie's age. Poochie was 12.The tumor was cancer. It had been removed 3 years ago in 2012 but it had slowly came back. When Poochie was lying down it was hard for him to get up. Poochie also had cataracts. Hie hearing had started going to. Mommy knew she was losing the sweet house dog who have been her constant companion. Mommy wanted Poochie to be with her a little longer. The vet decided to remove the tumor. He did on 9/1/15. Poochie did great! September....October & November and half of December. Then he started eating less and he didn't want to go on walks. On 1/1/16. Poochie started throwing up. Mommy sit up with Poochie all night. The next morning they took Poochie to the vet. He had pancreatitis, his blood sugar was 686 & he was dehydrated. They kept Poochie all weekend. He was no longer dehydrated but his blood sugar was so high it wouldn't read & that was after giving him insulin all weekend. The vet said there was nothing he could do. Mommy started crying. Then the vet said. "let me keep him a couple more days...maybe." "No, he's suffered enough." The vet put Poochie to sleep in mommy's arms. He's buried outside mommy's bedroom window. There's a solar light in behind his headstone.Poochie's death brought about the end of an era for mommy. The year's of the dogs. Almost 13 years & 22 dogs all because mommy wanted a house dog & she loved her little man so much that love spread to others & continues to spread.Poochie, we love you!

Alabama Gang/Please vote us (#43042) DOTM in June!! February 2014, a nice day when Bubba, Prissy & Precious started having a fit. Mommy Little Buddy & Poochie went outside to see what was wrong they had something under daddy's truck. It was 2 puppies. One looked like a german shepard mix. The other one looked like a black Lab. The people down the road were always getting dogs. Daddy called & yes they were their dogs. Mommy put them in her car & put them out at their house (they were at work). The German shepherd stayed there the black lab beat mommy home! This happened 3 times. Mommy & daddy both kept taking her home but she kept coming back. Finally they decided to leave her alone. The Lady came up to our house after 2 weeks & asked mommy if it was okay if she stayed there to play with Precious...mommy said...sure. Mommy called her Zoey. Zoey was so sweet! She and Precious played all year. They never came back to get Zoey. We fed her...put flea & tick medicine on her bathed her and most important we loved her. She was one of the gang. February 12,2015, Mommy was called into work. She heard the outside dogs barking. She looked out & saw them running into the woods. Mommy left for work. She got off at 2pm. Driving home she saw a black dog out of the corner of her eye but she didn't pay much attention. When she pulled up she didn't see Zoey. Daddy met her at the car and told her he couldn't find Zoey. She had been gone all day. Mommy thought of the black dog,she got back in her car but the dog was nowhere to be seen. She called Zoey but no dog came.Like Tuck & the 3 Pyrennees she was gone without a trace. There are coyotes and big cats deep in the woods. We think Zoey went in the woods but never made it out.If she did make it out though we pray she found a good home. Four months later mommy was at the store the lady who had owned Zoey was there. They talked a few minutes, finally the lady asked how her black lab was doing. Mommy just looked at her.."I don't know but we lost Zoey our black lab." The Lady turned around and left.Four months! Some humans don't know the meaning of love! Zoey did though! That's what she wanted to! We're so glad she found it with us!

Mommy first impulse was to stop but no the dog was probably just out roaming around. The dog looked good & healthy. Then this big truck passed mommy almost hitting the dog.Mommy pulled over to the side of the road the dog was almost hit 2 more times before mommy got to her. She ran to mommy and when mommy opened the door she jumped right in! Mommy put her in the paper & put pictures of her at the post office but no one ever called about her. The vet said she's a border terrier. Mommy named her Precious because she's precious! Never meets a stranger, loves to play, loves everyone! Including cookies!

Alabama Gang/Please vote us (#43042) DOTM in June!! Do you remember when I told you about Ruff? Mommy was working at a nursing home where this girl would give stray dogs a home. Well this young lady was always been around. There have been times we'd get a dog for a night or two. Then they would go live somewhere else. It was fall of 2013 the phone rang...mommy answered. Puppy patrol! Mommy talked on the phone about this white Chihuahua that was found at the side of the woods. It was solid white except the back of its ears were a tan color. She told mommy had to find the dog and she warned mommy..he's starving....you can see his hip bones, he's so afraid. Be careful he'll bite! Mommy got in her car she was gone along time but she came in with the skinniest dog I'd ever seen. The dog was so scared he wouldn't even eat!He stayed behind the couch all night. The next morning mommy left with him.We didn't see the dog for a year. Then mommy brought him home one day and what a difference! He wasn't skinny & he was clean. Mommy told us she had kept him at her son's house but him and his family were moving back so she brought him here to live. For along time he ran from us but finally Poochie won him over. Last year the vet said he was 13 years old. He'll be 14 sometime this year. Not only does he look better he acts better! He took it hard when Poochie went to the bridge but now he's the most happiest little dog you'd ever meet. Love has made such a difference...Love never gives up! Love heals! Love is exactly what we all need!If you don't believe it look at Little Buddy! PS Mommy works today...so if she doesn't get to you this am she will when she gets home tonight! Thanks to Isabella for vote 42,800!! Love you all!

Alabama Gang/Please vote us (#43042) DOTM in June!! On May 14th 2012 Miss lady passed away with cancer of her spleen. She died on the operating table. Her death took a big toil she was sweet. The Alabama gang was down to 3,Poochie...Prissy....Bubba (Alabama trio). In June Daddy went to the cemetery to clean his mother & brother's grave. When he came in he yelled for mommy. Mommy & Poochie went outside & there stood 2 puppies they were around 4 months old. ommy just stared as daddy told her he found them eating bugs in the graveyard. You could tell they had worms & mommy noticed scars. We felt so sorry for them they were fed & bathed. Afterwards mommy asked daddy if he knew what breed of dog they were. He wasn't sure. Mommy told him they were brindle pit bull puppies. The next day they were taken to the vet, given shots. The vet thought that someone had tried to get them to fight. The scars looked like bite marks. He thought they were siblings. Daddy named the female little Ann & the male Big Dan.They were precious! We loved them & they loved us too. We had cats, A mother and her 6 babies who were grown. The closest neighbor we had was 3 miles away so we were off to ourselves. Then we got a neighbor who only lives a mile down the road. They had horses, 2 0f them were miniature horses. A friend gave them 32 chickens. That's when the trouble started. Big Dan & Little Ann killed all 32 chickens one morning. Mom only found the momma cat & one of her babies the next day. Then 2 days later mommy woke up & her Dan & Ann barking down the road. She went outside there was Bubba & Prissy looking down the road. Mommy called Daddy She thought a coyote was in the neighbor's pasture with the horses. She kept calling Dan & Ann finally they came home. They were wet. But something wasn't right. They were wet but they were covered in blood. Big Dan & Little Ann had killed one of the miniature horses! Mommy went looking in the woods after she saw Dan chasing the mother cat. She found parts of the cats lying around. Daddy & Mommy didn't know what to do mommy called all the vets in town no one would take Ann or Dan because they were unadoptable & they wouldn't put them to sleep because they were young..healthy dogs. Dayy had to shot them. That was the saddest, hardest thing they ever went through with dogs. In stead of digging 2 holes daddy dug one very large one & buried them together. Two markers with their names adorn their graves. This is not a happy story & thinking about them makes mommy & daddy both cry. They died in March 2013.Big Dan.....Little Ann we love you!We couldn't keep you but your still part of the Alabama Gang!

Alabama Gang/Please vote us (#43042) DOTM in June!! During the time between June 26 2010 when Ruff passed and March 2011. We had 3 other dogs who were put in wit the Alabama Gang. 3 Pyrenees. Mommy loved the breed. Ruff had been a wonderful dog & mommy wanted another one. But you need to know more than just how sweet & pretty they are. For instance the Great Pyrenees guards flocks of goats or sheep. You would think 30 acres is enough but not to a Pyrenees. 4 days after Ruff passed the humane society called mommy. They had one. He's name was Oscar. Oscar did great for 1 month. Then he was gone. Mommy & Daddy searched & searched they found him at a house 8 miles down the road. They brought him home. He stayed 1 week this time but they never found him. Next Bruno came to live with us. Bruno stayed 3 weeks then Big Boy came. He had a skin rash. He stayed 3 months until the rash cleared up & he was looking beautiful then just like Oscar & Bruno he was gone. Never to be found. He went missing 2 days after Tuck did. Since then there have been no more Pyrenees for us not until we have a flock for them to watch. Idle paws are the devils work shop!

Alabama Gang/Please vote us (#43042) DOTM in June!! Mommy's daddy came to live with us & she started working weekends. One Saturday in March 2009 she pulled into the driveway, opened the car door and this black puppy without any fur on her head jumped im mommy's lap. Daddy has said "NO more dogs we have 4 no more!" Daddy was on the front porch. "Whose puppy" mommy asked. "I don't know. I was looking at your dad's old house and this green truck pulled up out front and the man got out put the puppy & a can of dog food on the sidewalk then drove away. She came over to us & followed me around so I brought her home I thought we could keep her until Monday then you could take her to the humane society. Mommy looked at daddy "do you know who your talking to?" Monday morning mommy took Prissy Maybell Jones to the vet. She had red mange. She's in remission has been for 8 years. Prissy is part pt bull & part chow chow. 4 months later we all moved to 30 acres. Which is a good thing since Prissy could climb the chain linked fence. Prissy is still in remission and doing great!

Alabama Gang/Please vote us (#43042) DOTM in June!! Mommy worked in the nursing home until 2006 then she got a job closer to home. Mommy worked 3p till 11p. One night while Mommy & another nurse was eating supper a woman who worked in the kitchen came & sit down at their table the woman introduced herself told mommy she knew the girl that gave her Ruff and told mommy she had a 2 year old basset hound named Bubba. She was working 2 jobs and never sent any time with Bubba except to feed him. She said Bubba was always alone. She wanted mommy to take him. Mommy said she'd talk to daddy. Daddy said..NO! Mommy begged and begged until daddy said...well bring him home and we'll see. Bubba was the funniest doggie any of us had ever seen. He loves everyone! Miss Lady and Poochie would chase each other then chase Ruff & Bubba. Ruff was so clumsy he'd fall over his own paws and Bubba would trip on his ears! Bubba was red with white on his paws and chest. Bubba was born in 2004.He soon will be 12 and he now has a lot of white on him. When we moved out next to the woods with no fence Bubba and Ruff loved hunting. But Bubba has slowed down a lot.Mommy has a little song she always sang to Bubba...Bubba Roo...Bubba Roo...I love you...my Bubba Roo

Alabama Gang/Please vote us (#43042) DOTM in June!!

Alabama Gang/Please vote us (#43042) DOTM in June!! Poochie & Miss Lady were the best of friends. Daddy would get one end of a towel & Miss Lady would get the other end. They would play tug of war. Then Daddy would drop his end & Miss Lady would run over to Poochie. He'd get on the towel & Lady would drag him over the yard. Such good happy times. Poochie grew over the next 4 years. He looked like a 25 lb. Yorkie! His brown face had turned to gold.He was quite a handsome fella and Miss Lady was a black beauty. When Poochie was four and Miss Lady was 5. Mommy bought a magazine called Dog Fancy. In it she found a website entitled Dog channel. She went to it and made both Miss Lady & Poochie a page. Mommy loved Dog channel...still does. Having two dog pages soon became too much to keep up with So Mommy combined their pages. They were known as Poochie & Lady.

Alabama Gang/Please vote us (#43042) DOTM in June!! Miss Lady was a wonderful dog but Mommy still wanted a house dog. One morning she was looking at the paper & read an ad that said "free puppies to a good home." Mommy dialed the phone & asked the lady if they would get very big? "Oh no they're mixed...part yorkie & part Jack Russell terrier. Mommy talked Daddy into going to see them. There were 7 puppies 5 males & 2 females. Mommy wanted a male."Let me show you the brown faced one. Mommy picked up the puppy & she was a goner! He was the cutest puppy she had ever seen.....they were 4 weeks old & wouldn't be given away for another 2 weeks. During the 2 weeks mommy & Daddy thought of names. They thought of several but decided he was a Poochie! Mommy bought Poochie a dog bed (which was never used) & toys. Daddy went & picked up Poochie when it was time.Poochie looked like a Yorkie when he was 6 weeks old. He was always Mommy's pride & joy! He loved her too! They were inseparable! When the kids were home the rule was "no animals in the house." That changed when Poochie came! But he would become Mommy's dog of a lifetime!

♥ Brandi ♥ THANK YOU for voting me May DOTM!!

♥ Brandi ♥ THANK YOU for voting me May DOTM!! Hi, Bella! It is day 31 and the last day of my campaign! Can you believe that May is over already? Where in the world did it go?! Today it was 86ºF and partly sunny with 58% humidity when we did our morning laps. It was HOT out there. No running or playing out there for us! I found a dead Starling behind the Shop. Mom had to throw it into the woods. It was already starting to smell! YUCK! Good news…I have been good for days and days now! Mom is so proud of me! And…I am enjoying the extra attention and hugs I am getting! This is kind of neat! Mom hopes I stay this way for a long time, but with me…who knows?! Earlier this month, I told you all about my fur family. But…I never told you about the most important member of our family…Mom! So…today I will tell you a little about her. Mom was born and raised in a suburb north of Detroit, Michigan. She lived in Michigan until her late husband retired. In October of 2003, they moved to the property in Alabama that they purchased in 1992. They lived in a Mobile Home that they put on the property until their new house could be built. Mom worked for years on designing the right house. When she was finally satisfied with the design and layout, they started breaking ground right after Christmas in 2005. Mom was the main contractor and handled everything from scheduling subcontractors to ordering materials, to writing the payroll and doing the painting. There were a lot of delays like: Katrina, Ivan and lots of rainy weather. They finally were able to move into the new home in April of 2007. Mom has been working for years on extensive flower gardens in the front and back of the house. They are still a work in progress, until Mom gets them the way she is happy with them. Mom is fussy, so that will be a feat! BOL! During Mom’s life, she has mostly owned dogs. Her first dog as an adult was a beautiful purebred 4 month old white German Shepherd. She named her Lady. She got her in 1973. She trained her to walk at her side and at the same pace as Mom. She was super smart and obedient. She was Mom’s baby!! She was devastated when she got divorced from her first husband in 1976 and couldn’t afford to feed her, a young child and herself. Her next dog was a black and tan Male German Shepherd that was wondering the neighborhood. That was in the Fall of 1985. She took him in and tried to find his owner. No one claimed him so she kept him. He was so handsome! He was so smart, easy to train and obedient. He was about 8-10 years old when she found him. He lived 6 years and Mom was devastated when she had to let him go to the Rainbow Bridge. Mom’s next dog was in 2005. He was a 6 month old black Newfoundland/Flat-Coated Retriever. He wandered onto the property here in Alabama. She couldn’t find anyone to claim him, so she kept him and named him Buddy. He was big, gentle and very smart. Unfortunately, he liked to roam and got killed crossing the road. Mom was so ! She had begged to get an enclosure to keep him safe, but her late husband would not. After months of grieving Mom searched the Internet and found Goldie on Petfinder. She was an 8 month old Golden Retriever/Border Collie mix. She adopted her the day she met her! That was in January of 2007. She was Mom’s baby and they were inseparable! She was so devastated when Goldie died in March 2013 at the young age of 6 from a heart attack. Because Mom was living alone, her siblings insisted that she should get another dog soon. So…she search and found Sheba on Petfinder. She fought for weeks to get her out of the kennel at a Vet’s office. She finally adopted her in March of 2013, a few weeks after she lost Goldie. Sheba has become Mom’s best friend and they are inseparable, too. Sheba loves Mom so much and is so protective and possessive of her. She is Mom’s shadow! And then there is me! And you know my story from earlier in this month. Mom has never had any trouble training any of her dogs, but I am a challenge for her! But Mom is determined that she will succeed some day! And…you know the stories of all the kitties that she has rescued. So now you know a little about all of us! Hope to see me in the DOTM window tomorrow! Please vote for me for May DOTM! Thank you for your support! Hope you have a fun Tuesday! BBS. Left you a vote and lots of sweet and sassy Sheprador Kisses…

♥ Brandi ♥ THANK YOU for voting me May DOTM!!

♥ Brandi ♥ THANK YOU for voting me May DOTM!! Hi, Bella! It is day 30 of my campaign and Memorial Day! Take time today to remember and honor all the fallen heroes. Today I will tell you about THE HISTORY OF MEMORIAL DAY: Originally called Decoration Day, from the early tradition of decorating graves with flowers, wreaths and flags, Memorial Day is a day for remembrance of those who have died in service to our country. It was first widely observed on May 30, 1868 to commemorate the sacrifices of Civil War soldiers, by proclamation of Gen. John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of former Union sailors and soldiers. During that first national celebration, former Union Gen. and sitting Ohio Congressman James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National Cemetery, after which 5,000 participants helped to decorate the graves of the more than 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers who were buried there. This event was inspired by local observances of the day that had taken place in several towns throughout America in the three years after the Civil War. In 1873, New York was the first state to designate Memorial Day as a legal holiday. By the late 1800s, many more cities and communities observed Memorial Day, and several states had declared it a legal holiday. After World War I, it became an occasion for honoring those who died in all of America’s wars and was then more widely established as a national holiday throughout the United States. WHEN IS MEMORIAL DAY? In 1971, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act and established that Memorial Day was to be celebrated on the last Monday of May. Several southern states, however, officially celebrate an additional, separate day for honoring the Confederate war dead, sometimes referred to as a Confederate Memorial Day: January 19 in Texas; third Monday in Jan. in Arkansas; fourth Monday in Apr. in Alabama and Mississippi; April 26 in Florida and Georgia; May 10 in North and South Carolina; last Monday in May in Virginia; and June 3 in Louisiana and Tennessee. Memorial Day is celebrated at Arlington National Cemetery each year with a ceremony in which a small American flag is placed on each grave. Traditionally, the President or Vice President lays a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. About 5,000 people attend the ceremony annually. “We do not know one promise these men made, one pledge they gave, one word they spoke; but we do know they summed up and perfected, by one supreme act, the highest virtues of men and citizens. For love of country they accepted death, and thus resolved all doubts, and made immortal their patriotism and their virtue.” - James A. Garfield, May 30, 1868 Arlington National Cemetery. In 1915, inspired by the poem “In Flanders Fields,” Moina Michael replied with her own poem: “We cherish too, the Poppy red, That grows on fields where valor led, It seems to signal to the skies That blood of heroes never dies.” She then conceived of an idea to wear red poppies on Memorial day in honor of those who died serving the nation during war. She was the first to wear one, and sold poppies to her friends and co-workers with the money going to benefit servicemen in need. Later a Madam Guerin from France was visiting the United States and learned of this new custom started by Ms. Michael. When she returned to France she made artificial red poppies to raise money for war orphaned children and widowed women. This tradition spread to other countries. In 1921, the Franco-American Children’s League sold poppies nationally to benefit war orphans of France and Belgium. The League disbanded a year later and Madam Guerin approached the VFW for help. Shortly before Memorial Day in 1922 the VFW became the first veterans’ organization to nationally sell poppies. Two years later their “Buddy” Poppy program was selling artificial poppies made by disabled veterans. In 1948 the US Post Office honored Ms. Michael for her role in founding the National Poppy movement by issuing a red 3 cent postage stamp with her likeness on it. NATIONAL MOMENT OF REMEMBRANCE: The “National Moment of Remembrance” resolution was passed on Dec 2000 which asks that at 3 p.m. local time, for all Americans “To voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a Moment of remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to ‘Taps.” Stay tuned...I will surprise you with something tomorrow! Please vote for me daily for May DOTM! Thank you for your support! Hope you have a fun & safe Memorial Day! BBS. Left you a vote and lots of sweet and sassy Sheprador Kisses…

♥ Brandi ♥ THANK YOU for voting me May DOTM!! Hi, Bella! It is day 29 of my campaign. Good Grief…the month is almost over! Today it was about 83ºF and cloudy when we did our morning laps. It felt a little hot out there again so we didn’t play or do any running. I was a very good girl yesterday and so far today! YAY! As you all know, it is Sunday and we are going to the park! YAY! Today I will finish telling you more about FOOD AGRESSION: WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT: Here are some of the techniques you can use: 1. Hand feeding: Start your dog’s meal by giving him food by hand, and use your hands to put the food in the bowl, which will give it your scent. The goal is to get your dog used to eating while your hands are around his face, and to have no aggressive reaction if you stick your hands in or near the bowl while he’s eating. 2. Treat tossing: Drop your dog’s favorite treats into the bowl while she’s eating so she’ll learn that people approaching the bowl is a good thing and not a threat. You can also put treats into the bowl when you walk near it and she’s not eating. This reinforces the connection in your dog’s mind that people near her bowl is good. 3. “Trade-Up”: When your dog is eating their regular food, approach them with something better, like meat or a special treat. The goal here is to get your dog to stop eating their food to take the treat from you. This teaches your dog several things. One is that no one is going to steal his food if he looks away from it. The other is that removing his attention from his food when people come around leads to a reward. WHAT’S GOING ON? In rehabilitating a food aggressive dog, two things are happening. One is that you’re desensitizing your dog so that she will no longer become protective when anybody approaches her while she’s eating. The other is that you’re counterconditioning your dog by teaching her to associate people approaching her bowl with good things. There are many other techniques you can use to reduce food aggression or to prevent it from happening in the first place. The key, as always, is to be calm, assertive, and consistent. The term “food aggression” can be misleading because people can easily interpret it as dominance, and it really is better to think of it as resource guarding. As humans, we need to establish our place as Pack Leader, and teach our dogs that there’s no reason to guard their food from us. Source: https://www.cesarsway.com/dog-behavior/food-aggressive/food-aggression-and-what-to-do-about-it. Mom was pretty successful with all the methods I have told you about. She also did other things like letting Sheba eat out of my bowl first and then letting me finish. Mom also handled my food with her fingers and then “ate” out of my bowl before letting me eat. I used to have to eat by myself but Mom gradually moved my bowl closer and closer to Sheba and now we eat side-by-side at the raised diner. Mom makes us sit and wait until she puts our food in our bowls. Then she says: “Sheba go eat.” After Sheba has been eating her food for a little while, she says: “Brandi, go eat.” Mom also gives Sheba her treats first before I get mine. It all works well at establishing my order in the pack, which I have to say, is pretty far down! Stay tuned…I will talk about the meaning of Memorial Day tomorrow! Please vote for me daily for May DOTM! Thank you for your support! Hope you have a fun Sunday! BBS. Left you a vote and lots of sweet and sassy Sheprador Kisses…

♥ Brandi ♥ THANK YOU for voting me May DOTM!! Hi, Bella! It is day 28 of my campaign. The month is almost over! Today it was about 81ºF and cloudy when we did our morning laps. It felt a little hot out there so we didn’t play or do any running. Mom is going to stay inside again today in the A/C and do things in here. YAY! We like it when she is here with us! I was a very good girl yesterday and so far today! YAY! As you all know, I came with a few problems when Mom adopted me and brought me home. I will tell you about some of them. Today I will tell you more about FOOD AGRESSION: WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT: 1. The first step is to assess your dog’s overall behavior. Is she only showing possessiveness over food, or does the behavior extend to other things, like favorite toys, resting spots, or even people in the pack? 2. If the behavior isn’t limited to food, then your dog is showing general resource guarding, so you’ll need to use the techniques listed below as appropriate in all cases where your dog is showing aggression using the target object instead of food. 3. Also assess your dog’s overall confidence and behavior. If he is naturally a dominant dog, then you will need to assert yourself as the Pack Leader in a calm and assertive way. On the other hand, if he is timid or fearful, you will need to build up his confidence and teach him that his food is safe with humans around. 4. Finally, determine whether your dog’s food aggression is mild, moderate, or severe. For severe cases, start off by consulting a professional until you can get the dog down to a moderate level. Once you’ve completed these steps, you’re ready to start changing the behavior. Here are some of the techniques to use: BE CONSISTENT: If the source of your dog’s aggression is fear or anxiety over when the next meal is coming, then be sure that you are feeding your dog at the same times every single day. Dogs have a very good internal clock, and with consistency, they quickly learn how to tell when it’s time to get up, time to go for a walk, or time for the people to come home. Mealtime should be no different. Be regular in feeding to take away the anxiety. MUST WORK FOR FOOD: Before you even begin to prepare your dog’s food, make her sit or lie down and stay, preferably just outside of the room you feed her in. Train her to stay even after you’ve set the bowl down and, once the bowl is down, stand close to it as you release her from the stay and she begins eating, at which point you can then move away. Always feed your dog after the walk, never before. This fulfills his instinct to hunt for food, so he’ll feel like he’s earned it when you come home. Also, exercising a dog after he eats can be dangerous, even leading to life-threatening conditions like bloat. PACK LEADERS EAT FIRST: Remember, when a wild pack has a successful hunt, the alpha dogs eat first, before everyone else, and it should be no different in a human/dog pack. Never feed your dog before or while the humans are eating. Humans eat first and then, when they’re finished, the dogs eat. This will reinforce your status as the Pack Leader. “WIN” THE BOWL: Food aggression can actually be made worse if you back away from the bowl, because that’s what your dog wants. For every time that you do walk away when the dog is showing food aggression, the dog “wins.” The reward is the food and this just reinforces the aggression. Of course, you don’t want to come in aggressively yourself, especially with moderate to severe food aggression, because that is a good way to get bitten. However, you can recondition the dog until she learns that she wins when she lets you come near her while eating. Stay tuned…more about FOOD AGGRESSION tomorrow! Please vote for me daily for May DOTM! Thank you for your support! Hope you have a fun Saturday! BBS. Left you a vote and lots of sweet and sassy Sheprador Kisses…

♥ Brandi ♥ THANK YOU for voting me May DOTM!! Hi, Bella! It is day 27 of my campaign. Can you believe that the month is almost over already?! Where did it go? I was a bad girl yesterday afternoon and got into one of the kitty litter boxes. Guess I was looking for a snack? Mom got mad at me and I got scolded and put in time-out. I missed out on my afternoon snacks, too! Plus Sheba & Mom went for a ride without me! Sheba wouldn’t play with me last night either. She was mad at me, too! I was so sad. Mom had a good talk with me last night and hopes I will be better today. Today it was about 81ºF, sunny and hot when we did our morning laps. It felt hot out there so we didn’t play or do any running. Mom is going to stay inside again today in the A/C and do things in here. YAY! We like it when she is here with us! As you all know, I came with a few problems when Mom adopted me and brought me home. I will tell you about some of them. Today I will tell you about FOOD AGRESSION: When a dog shows aggression to protect his food, it can be a serious issue. Not only is there the danger of other dogs or humans in the house being bitten, but over time it can lead to the dog becoming possessive over everything. What is food aggression? Food aggression is a form of resource guarding in which a dog becomes very defensive when eating, using threats to force others away. It can be directed towards other animals, humans, or both. The behavior can also extend to treats. There are three degrees of food aggression: 1. Mild: the dog growls and may show its teeth. 2. Moderate: the dog snaps or lunges when approached 3. Severe: the dog bites. While it’s easy to assume that all cases of food aggression are a show of dominance, this isn’t necessarily the case. In a dog pack, the alpha dogs always eat first after a successful hunt, and then the other dogs get what’s left according to their pack position. For an alpha dog, showing food aggression is a form of dominance, but for dogs with a lower pack position, it can be a sign of anxiety or fearfulness. Remember, in the wild, dogs never know where or when their next meal will be, so it’s very instinctual for them to gobble up whatever food there is whenever they have it — and to protect it from anything that approaches. How to recognize food aggression: When a dog is eating, his body will stiffen and he may keep his head down. He is using his body language to “hover” over the meal and protect it. Other signs are that the whites of your dog’s eyes may be visible, their ears are held back, their tail is lowered, or their hackles may rise. A dog may show any or all of these signs. Finally, there are the abovementioned signs of the severity of the problem: growling, lunging, or biting. Stay tuned…more about FOOD AGGRESSION tomorrow! Please vote for me daily for May DOTM! Thank you for your support! Hope you have a fun Friday! BBS. Left you a vote and lots of sweet and sassy Sheprador Kisses…

♥ Brandi ♥ THANK YOU for voting me May DOTM!! Hi, Bella! It is day 26 of my campaign. Can you believe that the month is almost over already?! Where did it go? Today it was about 84ºF, sunny and hot when we did our morning laps. It felt hot out there so we didn’t play or do any running. Mom is going to stay inside today in the A/C and do things in here. YAY! We like it when she is here with us! Today I will tell you more about the CHESAPEAKE BAY RETRIEVER: LIVING CONDITIONS: Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are not recommended for apartment life. They are relatively inactive indoors and will do best with at least an average-sized yard. Chesapeake Bay Retrievers often enjoy sleeping outdoors if it is cooler outside, as they prefer cool climates. EXERCISE: The Chesapeake Bay Retriever needs a good deal of vigorous activity, including swimming if possible. If they do not get enough exercise they may become badly behaved from boredom and bottled up energy. They need to be taken on a daily brisk, long walk or jog where the dog is made to heel. They should never be allowed to walk out in front of the person holding the lead, as in a dog's mind, the leader leads the way and that leader needs to be the human. GROOMING: The dense, harsh, short-haired coat is oily with a distinct smell and is easy to groom. Brush with a firm bristle brush to remove the dead hairs. While the Chesapeake needs the occasional bath to prevent any noticeable odor, they should not be bathed so often that the oily texture is stripped out. The oily coat helps protect the dog from icy waters. This breed is an average shedder. ORIGIN: In the winter of 1807, an English ship with two Newfoundlands on board wrecked off the coast of Maryland. Everyone was saved, and the two dogs were given to a family of dog lovers. They were later mated with local retrievers including English Otter Hounds, Flat-Coated Retrievers and Curly-Coated Retrievers. Careful breeding over the years has created an outstanding retriever with incredible enthusiasm and endurance. The dogs were used to hunt waterfowl in the rough and icy waters of the Chesapeake Bay. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever has been known to retrieve hundreds of birds in a single day in frigid waters. This lively, enthusiastic hunter will come out of a river or marsh with only a few drops of water remaining on its oily coat, and these are quickly eliminated with a shake. Water rolls off the dog like a duck. Some of the Chesapeake Bay Retriever's talents include: tracking, hunting, retrieving, guarding, watchdog, Schutzhund, field spots and competitive obedience. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever was recognized by the AKC in 1878. GROUP: Gun Dog, AKC Sporting Group. RECOGNITION: ACA = American Canine Association Inc., ACR = American Canine Registry, AKC = American Kennel Club, ANKC = Australian National Kennel Club, APRI = American Pet Registry, Inc., CKC = Canadian Kennel Club, CKC = Continental Kennel Club, DRA = Dog Registry of America, Inc., FCI = Fédération Cynologique Internationale, KCGB = Kennel Club of Great Britain, NAPR = North American Purebred Registry, Inc., NZKC = New Zealand Kennel Club, NKC = National Kennel Club, UKC = United Kennel Club. Mom found this info on www.dogbreedinfo.com. Hope you enjoyed learning about the Chesapeake Bay Retriever! Sheba is a pretty pawsome mix, isn’t she?! Stay tuned…more dog info tomorrow! ♥ Brandi ♥ THANK YOU for voting me May DOTM!! Hi, Bella! It is day 25 of my campaign. Today it was about 82ºF, sunny and hot when we did our morning laps. Mom has to finish mowing today, so it looks like we will stay inside in the A/C and nap! The next couple of days, I will tell you about the breeds that my big sister, Sheba, is. How could I have forgotten to talk about her? BOL! She is part Golden Retriever and part Chesapeake Bay Retriever. Today I will tell you about the CHESAPEAKE BAY RETRIEVER: DESCRIPTION: The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a powerful, muscular dog. The head is broad with a medium stop. The muzzle is about the same length as the skull, tapering but not to a point. The wide-set eyes are yellowish to amber in color. The small ears are high set, hanging loosely. The teeth meet in a scissors or level bite. The lips are thin. The tail is medium in length, heavy at the base. Dewclaws on the back legs are usually removed and on the front legs may or may not be removed. The feet have webbed toes to aid in swimming. The oily, short coat is dense with a wave. The oils in the coat not only repel the water like a duck’s feathers do, but help the dog dry quickly, enabling the dog to swim in colder waters. Coat colors include brown, red, sedge or tan in the shade of dead grass. Sometimes there is a small white spot on the breast, belly, toes or back of the feet. HEIGHT, WEIGHT: Height: Males 23 - 26 inches (58 - 66 cm) Females 21 - 24 inches (53 - 61 cm), Weight: Males 65 - 80 pounds (29 - 36 kg) Females 55 - 70 pounds (25 - 32 kg). LIFE EXPECTANCY: About 10-12 years. LITTER SIZE: About 7 to 10 puppies. HEALTH PROBLEMS: Prone to eye problems and hip dysplasia. TEMPERAMENT: These are intelligent, brave and obedient dogs. They are trainable, willing and able to please, although they may be a little slow to learn. Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are affectionate, loving, friendly and good with children. They have a passion for water, swimming and retrieving. This breed will get along with cats that are already living in your house, but may chase other cats. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is not recommended for an inexperienced new dog owner. The handler needs to be confident, exerting a natural authority over the dog. A firm, consistent, but kind approach is the most successful way to handle them. If possible, attend obedience classes with this breed. Proper canine to human communication is essential. The Chesapeake can be fairly dominant and will become willful and may develop dominance problems if it senses the owners are passive, meek or timid. Be sure to properly train and socialized them. Take your puppy out with you as much as possible and introduce it to other dogs so that it has a chance to feel relaxed with them. The Chesapeake tends to be more dominant than other retrievers. Without the proper leadership they can become territorial, aggressive, willful, reserved with strangers and may not get along with other dogs. Chessies are strong canines that require firm training and good management. Chesapeakes are usually slow to mature. With the right owners they are a joy to own. Stay tuned…I will tell you MORE about the Chesapeake Bay Retriever tomorrow! Please vote for me daily for May DOTM! Thank you for your support! Hope you have a fun Wednesday! BBS. ♥ Brandi ♥ THANK YOU for voting me May DOTM!! Hi, Bella! Today is day 24 of campaign. Can you believe that there are only 7 more days to go? Hope you enjoyed reading about the Labrador Retriever. Yesterday it was about 77ºF and sunny with a nice breeze and low humidity when we did our morning laps. It was nice out! Mom was gone part of the afternoon so that was BORING. But…we sure were happy to see her when she got back! Today it was about 79ºF, sunny and hot when we did our morning laps. Mom has to get gas for the mower today, so that means a ride into town! YAY! The next couple of days, I will tell you about the breeds that my big sister, Sheba, is. How could I have forgotten to talk about her? BOL! She is part Golden Retriever and part Chesapeake Bay Retriever. Today I will tell you more about the GOLDEN RETRIEVER: HEALTH PROBLEMS: Prone to cancer including mast cell tumors. Also prone to hip dysplasia, Von Willebrand's disease, heart problems and congenital eye defects. Skin allergies are common in Golden Retrievers and often require veterinary attention. Gain weight easily; do not overfeed. LIVING CONDTIONS: This breed will do okay in an apartment if sufficiently exercised. They are moderately active indoors and will do best with at least a medium to large yard. EXERCISE: The Golden Retriever needs to be taken on a daily, brisk, long walk, jog or run alongside you when you bicycle, where the dog is made to heel beside or behind the person holding the lead, as instinct tells a dog that the leader leads the way and that leader needs to be the human. In addition, they like to retrieve balls and other toys. Be sure to exercise this dog well to avoid hyperactivity. GROOMING: Regular brushing of the long double coat will keep it in good condition, but extra care is needed when the dog is shedding its dense undercoat. Comb and brush with a firm bristle brush, paying particular attention to the dense undercoat. Dry shampoo regularly, but bathe only when necessary. This breed is an average shedder. ORIGIN: Originating in the Scottish Highlands in the late 1800s, the Golden Retriever was developed by Lord Tweedmouth, by crossing the original yellow Flat-Coated Retriever with the now extinct Tweed Water Spaniel. He later crossed in the Bloodhound, Irish Setter and more Tweed Water Spaniel. The dogs were called the Golden Flat-Coat and only later were they given the name Golden Retriever. The Golden Retriever is one of the most popular breeds known today, not only as family companions but for obedience competitions, hunting and tracking, as a birddog on both land and in the water, narcotics detection, service dog for the disabled, a guide for the blind and as a therapy dog. The Golden Retriever was first recognized by the AKC in 1925. GROUP: Gun Dog, AKC Sporting. ♥ Brandi ♥ THANK YOU for voting me May DOTM!! Hi, Bella! Today is day 23 of campaign. 8 more days to go! Hope you enjoyed reading about the Labrador Retriever. Sorry I am writing late, but Mom went somewhere with our neighbor this afternoon. And…she had the nerve to leave us at home! Not nice!! Yesterday it was really nice out, it was 77ºF and sunny with low humidity and a really nice breeze. It was perfect out! A perfect day for the park! YAY! It was a lot of fun. I met some kids and they were nice. Today it was about 77ºF and sunny with a nice breeze and low humidity when we did our morning laps. It was nice out! The next couple of days, I will tell you about the breeds that my big sister, Sheba, is. How could I have forgotten to talk about her? BOL! She is part Golden Retriever and part Chesapeake Bay Retriever. Today I will tell you about the GOLDEN RETRIEVER: DESCRIPTION: The Golden Retriever is a sturdy, medium-large sized dog. The skull is broad and the muzzle is straight, tapering slightly with a well-defined stop. The nose is black or a brownish black. The teeth meet in a scissors bite. The medium to large eyes are dark brown. The relatively short ears hang down close to the cheeks. When pulled forward the tip of the ear should just cover the eye. The tail is thick at the base with feathering along the underside. Dewclaws may be removed. The water-resistant coat is dense with a firm, straight or wavy outer coat. There is an untrimmed feathering on the underbelly, back of the legs, front of the neck and underside of the tail. Coat color comes in cream to a rich golden. TEMPERAMENT: These are lovable, well-mannered, intelligent dogs with a great charm. They are easily trained, and always patient and gentle with children. Charming, devoted and self-assured, they are a popular family dog. Energetic and loving, Golden Retrievers enjoy pleasing their masters, so obedience training can be very rewarding. They excel in competitions. Friendly with everyone, including other dogs, the Golden Retriever has very little, if any, guarding instincts. While unlikely to attack, Goldens make good watchdogs, loudly signaling a stranger's approach. This breed needs to be around people who display leadership to be happy. The Golden Retriever may become destructive and/or high-strung, over-exuberant and distractible if he is lacking in daily mental and physical exercise. Be sure to remain this dog’s firm, but calm, confident, consistent pack leader to avoid behavioral issues. Some of the Golden's talents are hunting, tracking, retrieving, narcotics detection, agility, competitive obedience and performing tricks. These dogs also love to swim. HEIGHT, WEIGHT: Height: Males 22 - 24 inches (56 - 61cm) Females 20 - 22 inches (51 - 56 cm);Weight: Dogs 60 - 80 pounds (27 - 36 kg) Females 55 - 70 pounds (25 – 32 kg). LITTER SIZE: About 5 to 10 puppies. LIFE EXPECTANCY: About 10-12 years. Stay tuned…more about the Golden Retriever tomorrow! Please vote for me daily for May DOTM! Thank you for your support! Hope you have a fun Monday! BBS. Left you a vote and lots of sweet and sassy Sheprador Kisses…

♥ Brandi ♥ THANK YOU for voting me May DOTM!! Hi, Bella! Today is day 22 of campaign. 9 more days to go! Hope you are enjoying reading about the Labrador Retriever. Yesterday it was really nice out, but Mom had work to do in the house, so we were inside most of the day. We did get all our walks in and got a ride down the road and back, so that was good! Today it was 77ºF and sunny with low humidity and a really nice breeze. It was perfect out! In a little while we are going to the park! YAY! Can’t wait! It will be a perfect day for the park! WOOHOO!! MORE ABOUT THE LABRADOR RETRIEVER: TEMPERAMENT: One of the most popular breeds in the USA, the Labrador Retriever is loyal, loving, affectionate and patient, making a great family dog. Highly intelligent, good-natured, very willing and eager to please, it is among the top choices for service dog work. Labs love to play, especially in water, never wanting to pass up the opportunity for a good swim. These lively dogs have an excellent, reliable temperament and are friendly, superb with children and equable with other dogs. They crave human leadership and need to feel as though they are part of the family. Labs are easily trained. Some may be reserved with strangers unless very well socialized, preferably while they are still puppies. Adult Labs are very strong; train them while they are puppies to heel on the leash, and not to bolt out doorways and gateways before the humans. These dogs are watchdogs, not guard dogs, although some have been known to guard. They can become destructive if the humans are not 100% pack leader and/or if they do not receive enough mental and physical exercise, and left too much to their own devices. Show lines are generally heavier and easier going than field lines. Field lines tend to be very energetic and will easily become high strung without enough exercise. Labs bred from English lines (English Labs) are more calm and laid back than Labradors bred from American lines. English Labs mature quicker than the American type. HEIGHT, WEIGHT: Height: Males 22 - 24 inches (56 - 61cm) Females 21 - 23 inches (53 - 58 cm); Weight: Males 60 - 75 pounds (27 - 34 kg) Females 55 - 70 pounds (25 - 32 kg). Some males can grow to 100 pounds (45 kg) or more. HEALTH PROBLEMS: Prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, PRA, mast cell tumors and eye disorders. LIFE EXPECTANCY: About 10-12 years. LITTER SIZE: About 5 to 10 puppies. LIVING CONDITIONS: Labrador Retrievers will do okay in an apartment if sufficiently exercised. They are moderately active indoors and will do best with at least an average-sized yard. EXERCISE: Labrador Retrievers are energetic dogs, delighted to work and play hard. They need to be taken on a daily, brisk, long walk, jog or run alongside you when you bicycle. While out on the walk the dog must be made to heel beside or behind the person holding the lead, as in a dog's mind the leader leads the way, and that leader needs to be the human. They will be in their glory if you give them a job to do. Gain weight easily, do not over feed. GROOMING: The smooth, short-haired, double coat is easy to groom. Comb and brush regularly with a firm, bristle brush, paying attention to the undercoat. Bathe or dry shampoo only when necessary. These dogs are average shedders. GROUP: Gun Dog, AKC Sporting. RECOGNITION: ACA = American Canine Association Inc., ACR = American Canine Registry, AKC = American Kennel Club, ANKC = Australian National Kennel Club, APRI = American Pet Registry, Inc., CCR = Canadian Canine Registry, CKC = Canadian Kennel Club, CKC = Continental Kennel Club, DRA = Dog Registry of America, Inc., FCI = Fédération Cynologique Internationale, KCGB = Kennel Club of Great Britain, NAPR = North American Purebred Registry, Inc., NKC = National Kennel Club, NZKC = New Zealand Kennel Club, UKC = United Kennel Club. ♥ Brandi ♥ THANK YOU for voting me May DOTM!! Hi, Bella! Today is day 21 of campaign. 10 more days to go! Hope you enjoyed reading about the German Shepherd dog. Yesterday it was wet out when we did our morning laps, but we went anyway. It started raining when we tried to do our afternoon laps, but we waited until it stopped. It rained off and on all day! Good for Moms new plants and flowers, but boring for us! Mom worked inside and we were bored! Looks like she will work more inside today. BORING! But at least the sun is shining and it is nice for our walks. Maybe we’ll get some playtime later when she is done. MORE ME: I will now tell you about the other part of me, which is Labrador Retriever. ORIGIN: Once known as the "St John's Dogs," the Labrador Retriever is one of the most popular breeds in the United States. The Lab is native to Newfoundland, where it worked side by side with fishermen catching fish that came loose from the lines and trained to jump into the icy waters to help pull in the nets. Specimens were brought to England in the 1800s by English ships coming from Labrador. The breed was crossed with setters, spaniels and other types of retrievers to improve its instincts as a hunter. The Labrador is highly trainable and is not only popular as a family companion but also excels in: hunting, tracking, retrieving, watchdog, police work, narcotics detection, guide for the blind, service dog for the disabled, search and rescue, sledding, carting, agility, field trial competitor and competitive obedience. DESCRIPTION: There are two types of Labradors, the English Labrador and the American Labrador. The English bred Lab comes from English bred stock. Its general appearance is different than the American bred Lab. The English bred Labs are heavier, thicker and blockier. The American bred Lab comes from American bred stock and is tall and lanky. The double coat is smooth and does not have any waves. Coat colors come in solid black, yellow or chocolate. There is also said to be a rare silver or gray color that is referred to by the AKC as a shade of chocolate. This color is controversial and some claim it is a Weimaraner cross, while others say it is a true mutation. The head of the Labrador is broad with a moderate stop. The nose is thick, black on black and yellow dogs and brown on chocolate dogs. The nose color often fades and is not considered a fault in the show ring. The teeth should meet in a scissors or level bite. The muzzle is fairly wide. The neck is proportionately wide and powerful. The body is slightly longer than tall. The short, hard coat is easy to care for and water-resistant. The medium-sized eyes are set well apart. Eye color should be brown in yellow and black dogs and hazel or brown in chocolate dogs. Some Labs can also have green or greenish-yellow eyes. In silver dogs the eye color is usually gray. The eye rims are black in yellow and black dogs and brown in chocolate dogs. The ears are medium in size, hanging down and pendant in shape. The otter tail is thick at the base, gradually tapering towards the tip. It is completely covered with short hair, with no feathering. The feet are strong and compact with webbed feet which aid the dog in swimming. Stay tuned…more about the Labrador Retriever tomorrow! Please vote for me daily for May DOTM! ♥ Brandi ♥ THANK YOU for voting me May DOTM!! Hi, Bella! Today is day 20 of campaign. I am having lots of fun with my campaign! Hope you are, too! Yesterday it was pretty wet when we did our morning laps, but we went anyway. Mom had more planting and weeding to do. I was sad when she told me I had to stay inside! She told me that I don’t listen and she needed to get her work done. She told me that if I stayed right by her when she worked, I could be out with them. But Mom…that is so BORING! It rained last night and was wet out when we did our morning laps, but we went anyway. It started raining when we tried to do our afternoon laps, but we waited until it stopped. It will rain off and on all day! Good for Moms new plants and flowers, but boring for us! MORE ABOUT GERMAN SHEHERD DOGS: HEALTH: Indiscriminate breeding has led to hereditary diseases such as hip and elbow dysplasia, blood disorders, digestive problems, bloat, epilepsy, chronic eczema, keratitis (inflammation of the cornea), dwarfism and flea allergies. Also prone to splenic tumors (tumors on the spleen), DM (degenerative myelitis), EPI (exocrine pancreatic insufficiency), and perianal fistulas and Von Willebrand's disease. HEIGHT & WEIGHT: Height: Males 24 - 26 inches (60 - 65 cm) Females 22 - 24 inches (55 - 60 cm), Weight: 77 - 85 pounds (35 - 40 kg). LIFE EXPECTANCY: Around 13 years. LITTER SIZE: About 6 to 10 puppies. GROOMING: This breed sheds bits of hair constantly and is a seasonally heavy shedder. They should be brushed daily or you will have hair all over your home. Bathe only when necessary; over bathing can cause skin irritation from oil depletion. Check ears and trim claws regularly. LIVING CONDITIONS: The German Shepherd will do okay in an apartment if sufficiently exercised. They are relatively inactive indoors and do best with at least a large yard. EXERCISE: German Shepherd Dogs love strenuous activity, preferably combined with training of some kind, for these dogs are very intelligent and crave a good challenge. They need to be taken on a daily, brisk, long walk, jog or run alongside you when you bicycle. While out on the walk the dog must be made to heel beside or behind the person holding the lead, as in a dog's mind the leader leads the way, and that leader needs to be the human. Most shepherds love to play ball or Frisbee. Ten to fifteen minutes of fetching along with daily pack walks will tire your dog out quite nicely as well as give him a sense of purpose. Whether it is ball chasing, Frisbee catching, obedience training, participation in a canine playgroup or just taking long walks/jogs, you must be willing to provide some form of daily, constructive exercise. The daily exercise must always include daily walks/jogs to satisfy the dog’s migration instinct. If under-exercised and/or mentally challenged, this breed can become restless and destructive. Does best with a job to do. OTHER NAMES: Alsatian, Deutscher Schaferhund, GSD, German Shepherd. GROUP: Herding, AKC Herding. RECOGNITION: ACA = American Canine Association Inc., ACR = American Canine Registry, AKC = American Kennel Club, ANKC = Australian National Kennel Club, APRI = American Pet Registry, Inc., CKC = Canadian Kennel Club, CKC = Continental Kennel Club, DRA = Dog Registry of America, Inc., FCI = Fédération Cynologique Internationale, GSDCA = German Shepherd Dog Club of America, KCGB = Kennel Club of Great Britain, NAPR = North American Purebred Registry, Inc., NKC = National Kennel Club, NZKC = New Zealand Kennel Club, UKC = United Kennel Club. ♥ Brandi ♥ THANK YOU for voting me May DOTM!! Hi, Bella! Today is day 19 of campaign. I am having lots of fun with my campaign! Hope you are, too! Yesterday it was about 71ºF, mostly cloudy, with a cool breeze when we did our morning laps. It felt a bit cool out, but nice. It had rained during the night so it was a bit wet out, but we did our laps anyway. What’s a little water? On our walk in the afternoon, I was a bad girl! I wasn’t listening very good to Mom. I stopped to eat something and wouldn’t come to her. She walked over to see what it was. It was a bar of Irish Spring Soap that Mom puts hanging by the bird feeders to keep the deer away! I was eating soap! YUCK! Mom told me that I just might get a big belly ache and never to do it again! Fortunately I never got sick from it! Good thing! Mom wouldn’t have wanted a mess to clean up when she came in from working outside! Mom told me that if I keep eating stuff outside, she we let me eat outside all the time and won’t waste money on good food or treats! OH NO…that would not be good! In the afternoon, Mom did planting and weeding. I wasn’t allowed to be outside, so I had to stay inside with the kitties. It rained last night and into the early morning. It was pretty wet when we did our morning laps, but we went anyway. Mom has more planting and weeding to do today. I know I will be staying inside! MORE ABOUT GERMAN SHEHERD DOGS: Today I will talk about their temperament: Often used as working dogs, German Shepherds are courageous, keen, alert and fearless. Cheerful, obedient and eager to learn. Tranquil, confident, serious and clever. GSDs are extremely faithful, and brave. They will not think twice about giving their lives for their human pack. They have a high learning ability. German Shepherds love to be close to their families, but can be wary of strangers. This breed needs his people and should not be left isolated for long periods of time. They only bark when they feel it is necessary. Often used as police dogs, the German Shepherd has a very strong protective instinct, and is extremely loyal to its handler. Socialize this breed well starting at puppyhood. Aggression and attacks on people are due to poor handling and training. Problems arise when an owner allows the dog to believe he is pack leader over humans and/or does not give the dog the mental and physical daily exercise it needs to be stable. This breed needs owners who are naturally authoritative over the dog in a calm, but firm, confident and consistent way. A stable, well-adjusted, and trained dog is for the most part generally good with other pets and excellent with children in the family. They must be firmly trained in obedience from an early age. German Shepherds with passive owners and/or whose instincts are not being met can become timid, skittish and may be prone to fear biting and develop a guarding issue. They should be trained and socialized from an early age. German Shepherds will not listen if they sense that they are stronger minded than their owner, however they will also not respond well to harsh discipline. Owners need to have an air of natural authority to their demeanor. Do not treat this dog as if he were human. Learn canine instincts and treat the dog accordingly. German Shepherds are one of the smartest and most trainable breeds. With this highly skilled working dog comes a drive to have a job and a task in life and a consistent pack leader to show them guidance. They need somewhere to channel their mental and physical energy. This is not a breed that will be happy simply lying around your living room or locked out in the backyard. The breed is so intelligent and learns so readily that it has been used as a sheepdog, guard dog, in police work, as a guide for the blind, in search and rescue service, and in the military. The German Shepherd also excels in many other dog activities including Schutzhund, tracking, obedience, agility, flyball and ring sport. His fine nose can sniff out drugs and intruders, and can alert handlers to the presence of underground mines in time to avoid detonation, or gas leaks in a pipe buried 15 feet underground. The German Shepherd is also a popular show and family companion. Stay tuned…more about German Shepherds tomorrow! Please vote for me daily for May DOTM! Thank you for your support! Hope you have a fun Thursday! BBS. Left you a vote and lots of sweet and sassy Sheprador Kisses…
