Melian (In Memory of Tiny) How are you doing? I'm so sorry it's been so long since I've written properly. I told mama that she hadn't written since before her birthday and she was shocked! Oh my, we haven't even thanked everyone for their kind birthday wishes. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Well, what is our excuse? Apart from mere laziness we have actually been very busy. And by the time we get to the computer late at night mama just does a bit of voting and any computer work that's been waiting. Plus, I do have to admit that she was sick for over three months with one bout after another of various colds, sinus infections, and flus. Lame excuse, I know. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Thank you for your concern for my chihuahua sister, Mouse. She's still having issues with her congestive heart failure and we keep having to up her dosage of lasix. And that is not a good thing. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ My BIG brother, Eddie the horse, is doing tons better now. He's perky again and has a bounce in his step. And he's back to loving his food. On Sunday we drove him 8 miles. I ran alongside and went about 16 miles. Pippin ran alongside the bike. Pippin is a real trooper having a cart horse as a sparring partner. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ It's good to be back but I won't promise anything about keeping up with my blogs. The days are too short and there's always just one more thing to do! ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Here's a vote for you. Melian (In Memory of Tiny) How are you doing? I know it's been a couple of fortnights since I've blogged properly but mama has been sick with the flu, busy, and sick with a cold. So, I've decided to let her rest while I blog tonight! :) ___________________________________________________________________________ Mama went down to drive Prince, Eddie's former buddy, and as always I went with her to keep her on track, etc. ___________________________________________________________________________ We headed down the road towards the huge farm where I get to run free and wild for an hour. I really needed to stretch my legs and I made the most of it! ___________________________________________________________________________ In the distance we sighted approximately 19 dark blobs on the same level as we. Like any normal person mama immediately turned Prince in the direction of these strange blobs. Running alongside I didn't have the best view but eventually I realized that the blobs were deer. ___________________________________________________________________________ Oh boy! I was so excited! I licked my lips and tensed for take off. I was going to catch my supper! ___________________________________________________________________________ Like a voice in the far, far, far distance I heard mama say something like, "NO!" Or was it, "GO?" Accompanied by muffled yelling I was off like a bullet! ___________________________________________________________________________ In seconds I was near but the deer were unusually big. As I drew closer I realized something was not quite right. How could they be deer sized from this distance? If I got closer they'd be the size of Eddie! Should I pursue this course of action? ___________________________________________________________________________ In the few seconds that these thoughts raced through my mind the muffled yelling became coherent and I heard the word, "Bad." Uh oh! I took one more longing look towards my supper and turned around to head back to the source of the yelling. ___________________________________________________________________________ Now I heard, "Good girl!" and I quickened my pace. I glanced behind and saw the herd of elk (yes, that's what they were) racing across the field. Boy, I showed them! I was mightily pleased with myself on a job well done. ___________________________________________________________________________ Are you looking forward to the weekend? I am! Melian (In Memory of Tiny) How are you doing? I hope you had a very Merry Christmas! I had great plans on stopping by everyone's pages with greetings but I simply ran out of time. It seems we're always rushing from one thing to another and scrambling in between while juggling 10 different concurrent jobs! Hey, try saying that 10 times fast! :) ___________________________________________________________________________ Anyway, what I was trying to say was a belated "Merry Christmas!" I hope you had a wonderful celebration and got tons extra yummy treats and presents. I got some really nice new squeaky toys and a ham bone. Yum! And now best wishes for the new year! ___________________________________________________________________________ We have about 2 feet of snow here and I LOVE it! I don't care if I'm a desert dog. I really like the cold and the snow. With all this snow mama finally got the chance to attach the sleigh runners to Pippin's cart. We took it out for a spin and Pippin is such a trooper. ___________________________________________________________________________ He's only 31" tall and with the snow being half his height, he really had to struggle. But, he doesn't give up. Ever! He just kept pulling and pulling and away we went. If the sleigh got stuck he just kept pulling until someone helped him. Shh, don't tell Pippin this, but I was mightily impressed. ___________________________________________________________________________ Do you remember our squirrel, Acorn? Tomorrow will be her 1st anniversary of passing on. A bittersweet day which I hope will end with her new critter of the month award to ring in the new year. I wanted to stop by on the day before and wish you a Happy Thanksgiving but the DC was down! ;( __________________________________________________________________________________ And then I wanted to stop by on the day itself but we were too busy stuffing ourselves with stuffing. And then Friday my kitty brother won cotd. And then the weekend we were eating again, and so on…. Every day I told mama I wanted to blog but we didn't get a chance! __________________________________________________________________________________ And yet again we are burning the midnight oil as I finally persuaded mama that enough was enough. I didn't want to wait any longer! How was your celebration? Do you have all your Christmas stuff up yet? __________________________________________________________________________________ Can you believe that December starts tomorrow? This year has flown by. It's pouring rain here which I'm not too happy about. Mama was happy until she had to go out in it and feed the horses. She came back wet, dirty, and frustrated. hehe I did NOT help her. Melian (In Memory of Tiny) How are you doing? Hey, remember me? It's been a really, really long time since I kept up with blogging on here. Actually, ever since the new and unimproved DC changes took place. I keep hoping (silly me) that things will get better, and a few things have been fixed, but I need to stop hoping in vain and just get my act together. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ So, I booted mama off the computer and have taken over tonight. I do apologize for the partial c/p but I have blogs dating all the way back to April. Oops, did you faint? Sorry! ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I'm not going to bother trying to write about everything that's happened over the past busy few months. I thought I'd just concentrate on an important event that happened a couple of weeks ago. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Well, we had a saluki convention! 10 salukis brought their humans and we had a blast. I'm a bit nervous around strange big dogs but salukis don't move and behave quite like "normal" dogs and I was much better around them than anyone, including me, expected. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ However, we took everyone to a large open field where we did lure-coursing. A couple of the large males decided that I was fun to tease. They started to chase me and the whole pack joined it. I high-tailed it out of there as fast as I could. The field was perhaps a mile long. haha They couldn't even begin to keep up with me! Within seconds I had a substantial lead. By the time I reached the end of the field they had hardly reached the centre. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ All of their owners just looked on open-mouthed in awe. They couldn't believe how fast I am! Hey, it's all those miles I go running almost every day. I'm fit and I'm Faaaaaaaaaaaaaaast! I think perhaps I'm the fastest dog in the world. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ And the best part? Mama had been telling me for weeks, "Now Melian, you think you're so fast and no other dog has ever caught you. Just wait till you meet these salukis. You'll be in for a surprise when you can't get away." hehe I showed her, didn't I? I think mama's mouth was the openest of all of them. And she is very proud of me. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ On that happy note I'm going to end this blog. I posted a couple of photos from the chase. I'm in front! I hope you're having a great weekend. Here's a vote for you!

Tens of thousands of miners stampeded into the Yukon territory and Alaska. Communities such as Dawson, Fairbanks, Circle City, and Ruby grew around the mining camps. Today, Alaska continues to be one of the top gold-producing states. The word Yukon means "big river" in Athabaskan. In the U.S. the Yukon ranks 3rd in length after the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. Numerous Athabaskan Indian and Yup'ik Eskimo villages are located along this 2,300-mile waterway that extends into Canada's Yukon territory. The historic Yukon was the main transportation route during the Klondike Gold Rush. We watch a dog musher drive his team of huskies and malamutes down the historic Iditarod Trail. The team is training for the 1,150-mile race that will begin in March. As the dogs race by, beautiful curtains of northern lights dance across the evening sky. The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race is the longest dog race in the word. Since 1973, mushers have competed in this race from Anchorage to Nome. The fastest time on record is that of musher Martin Buser. In 2002, he finished the race in 8 days, 22 hours, and 46 minutes. In 1925, 20 dog mushers raced to Nome in a team relay to save the town from a possible diphtheria epidemic. Now is the season when thousands of eagles gather at a special place in the Chilkat River Valley. Along this salmon-rich river, cottonwood trees are specked with the white heads of bald eagles. The Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve protects the world's largest concentration of bald eagles and their critical habitat. During the fall and winter, a large reservoir of open water on the Chilkat River provides ideal feeding conditions for the hungry eagles. Five species of salmon spawn in the Chilkat and its tributaries. Because I haven't been able to be very active on DC lately, I didn't expect so many to remember me. Mom and I were very sorry not to be diligently sending messages throughout the first week of my run, and we felt really bad about it. We have been looking so forward to this for a long, long time, and we wanted to send thank-yous every day. But some things came up that Mommy had to take care of. Now Peaka keeps teasing me about how she started off her run last year, and how mom helped her blog every day from the start. But I guess I'll have to forgive them both :) It sure is embarrassing that on the 9th day of the month, I'm telling you what my "theme" is.......you're probably thinking, "What, 'Dogs going MIA?'"....BOL!!! But maybe my profile photo was a hint? Okay enough of that, (now Peaka's really sending me strange looks, hehe).......
