• A story from Peaka, Part 3 •

I was checked in at the vets first. While mom and her dad were waiting, Indigo fell asleep under mom's dad's chair. For some reason she wanted to be with him. The vets replaced my tube and did more surgery. Mom took me out to the car while Indigo was checked in. Mom's dad came outside and mom knew by his face that it wasn't good. Dad told mom that Indigo couldn't be saved and to come in and say goodbye. The vet, Tom, and his wife, Kathy had tears in their eyes that Indigo had to be put down. She was the sweetest dog mom had ever met and was given only one year to enjoy such a good life. She had complete kidney failure and ulcers all throughout inside her body. That is why she cried when she was touched. The vets told mom that the only cure wasn't available in the US and it was extremely expensive anyway. Indigo had been given a shot before mom saw her so mom doesn't know if she was all there when mom kissed her for the last time and told her she loved her. That was the hardest goodbye mom ever made, and the saddest day in her life yet. The second drain tube worked how it was supposed to and in time my wound healed up. It was wonderful when my cone could be taken off. It had been on so long mom forgot how cute I was. I looked just like a puppy when it was off!! I was so glad and ran around the house. hehe. Indigo was buried on that beautiful island where the happy days of her short life were spent, right next to Hudson, who was the sweet Malamute mom's dad had when mom was very young. He died of cancer at age 5. He was the same age as mom. A month after Indigo died, Costco sent us something in the mail about a canned dog food that had been poisoned. They said to discontinue use and we would get a refund. Not all the money in the world could fill the hole in mom's heart that Indigo left. To this day mom is very mad that if it hadn't have been for a few poisoned spoonfuls of a certain kind of dog food, her baby would still be here, and only 6 years old. We bought that canned dog food for Indigo to help regain her weight because she was recovering from parasites. I got a taste too but thank God I was strong enough to not let it take me over like it did Indigo. I helped mom so much while she was just getting used to Indigo not being there anymore and mom can't imagine how much worse it would have been if she had lost me too and didn't have my soft fur to cry on while she was going through the loss of Indigo. Mom can look at Indigo's photos now without crying but 4 years later, memories of precious Indigo are still fresh in mom's thoughts and she will always treasure them deep in her heart...memories of a little mutt who never wasted a chance to show her love. Hope you enjoyed the rest of my story. Here's a vote! Lab Licks, Peaka 0(..)0

• A story from Peaka, Part 2 •

A close friend of mom's dad had a vet who was a friend of the family. On the drive to the vet's office mom saw the Northern Lights for the first time. It was night and the vet's office was closed but he was so wonderful that he opened everything up and worked the whole night saving my life. He spent 6 hours cleaning my wound, which was very deep; it went all the way from behind my shoulder to my abdomen. Then I had a ton of stitches (external and internal) and a drain tube put in me. My family would never have been able to pay for all the expenses involved with my surgery but the generosity of our friends and the vet made it possible. A while later the fluids inside me stopped coming out the drain tube and built up in a spot next to it instead. At the same time, Indigo got very sick. She started shaking terribly, refusing food, and crying when touched. Mom's dad said this time he'd go into Anchorage by himself and take me and Indigo. Mom wanted very much to go with him though. Some how she just felt Indigo was going away...forever. That night she slept on the floor with Indigo and cried. She loved Indigo so much and didn't know why this was happening. Also, she was so worried about me. The fluids were just building up more and more like a pouch. The next morning mom's dad said mom could go with him. On the flight there, Indigo curled up on mom's dad's lap while he flew. It was so adorable. Mom got very sick on the flight and threw up more than once. It was horribly bumpy. The plane was bobbing up and down and it was the worst flight mom had ever had. I wasn't feeling too great either. We sure were glad when that plane ride was over. (Come by tomorrow for part 3)

• A story from Peaka, Part 1 •

When mom was little and she and her friends pretended they were dogs, mom always had her name be Indigo, and said when she got her own dog she would name it Indigo. In the spring of 05 a family came out to Port Alsworth (where we lived then) with their litter of mixed breed puppies. The kids in the family told mom about the puppies and told her to come see them. Mom and her mother went to where they were staying and looked at the puppies. The runt was tan, the only one of its color. That one caught mom's eye right away. She was soooo cute and stood out from the rest. Mom's mom said "That's my puppy!" She was half joking but a few weeks later the family called us and said "Your puppy is ready to go home with you". So Indigo was flown out in a tiny plane (the only way to get there) to Port Alsworth. Mom had so much fun raising & training Indigo and learning all about dogs. Indigo was a very cute & good dog and was mom's best friend. A year later mom brought me home (that story is on my page). We lived on a beautiful island all to ourselves and Indigo and I ran loose on it all day. We had the best lives a dog could have. Then one day in 07 mom was leaving with her mom and brother on the 4-wheeler to go pick up her dad who had just landed in his airplane. I was a ways behind them and came running up to them with a big flap of skin hanging from my left side. I needed immediate medical attention. Thank goodness since mom's dad had just landed, the plane was all warmed up and ready to go. Mom and her dad jumped in the plane with me and flew to Anchorage - 1 and a half hrs.
