I look at Melian in a new light now. Whenever I'm out working or having fun I never worry about Melian. She's the fastest dog for miles. Not even her own kind can catch her. I think that only a greyhound, and a fit one at that, would even have a chance. And it would have to do it in the first few metres because they don't have the stamina of a saluki. ___________________________________________________________________________ So, when good dogs go bad and threaten my Meli I am secure in the knowledge that she only has to run and she's safe. And that has always been the case. She doesn't stick around when there's danger. It's each dog for herself and off she flees. ___________________________________________________________________________ In the back of my mind I have always wondered if she gives any thought to others who may also be in danger. I guess she figures I can take care of myself. After all, I am the boss. Haven't I made that clear? ___________________________________________________________________________ Anyway, yesterday she showed a different side. I was out building a fence for a new pen for Eddie. Melian was with me, as were tiny Kermit and Tuna. Suddenly a vicious dog came charging out at us. He visits our neighbourhood from time to time and he's not nice. ___________________________________________________________________________ Immediately I thought about Kermit and Tuna. I looked and Kermit had already headed home through a small hole in the fence. He was safe. Tuna, who is partially deaf and blind, and though a sweetheart she is also a bit retarded, was standing out in the open. ___________________________________________________________________________ The dog, a sporting breed, came at us full speed and in attack mode. I leapt in front of him to head him off. He turned back and ended up with the fence between him and Melian and Tuna. ___________________________________________________________________________ I rushed back to scoop up Tuna. She paid no heed to me and with her hackles raised she was ready to attack the danger. She's so clueless about these things. She knows that in a dangerous situation someone will make sure she's okay. So, she's fearless! She would walk off a cliff, no questions asked. ___________________________________________________________________________ I grabbed her up and rushed to put her inside our gate. The gate shut, Tuna was now safe. The dog was insane with rage. He kept lunging at the fence and twice he ended up halfway through it in his attempt to bite Melian. ___________________________________________________________________________ Melian didn't run away. She kept pacing back and forth and threatening this mean dog. Suddenly the dog ran back and figured out a way round the unfinished fence. He came charging again and again I leapt in his path. This time he didn't turn back but swerved around me heading towards Melian. ___________________________________________________________________________ He's a good 20lbs heavier than Melian and he was going at a fast clip. I was sure Melian would run away as always but no. She had the little dogs to defend. Instead of running she turned around and faced the oncoming attacker ready to bite. ___________________________________________________________________________ He slammed right into her with his teeth bared and bit her full on the flank, piercing right through the skin and completely bruising her whole side. Still she stood her ground. She turned back to bite him (I sure hope she got a bite in!) and he turned away ready to renew his attack. At this point we managed to get a hold of him and he was dragged back home. ___________________________________________________________________________ I have never seen Melian stay around when there was danger. The only difference now was the presence of the small dogs. Melian was protecting her pack. One bite from this dog and they would have been dead. No doubt about it. ___________________________________________________________________________ I am very proud of my brave girl. She showed a valour I didn't know she had and she was injured in the line of duty. Her side has a puncture wound and it's purple with bruising from the full on hit. Both her back legs are sore and have scrapes and bruises. She deserves a Purple Heart!

How We Met?

My best friend and companion, Tiny, died on the 10th of April, 2009. I was devastated and didn't want another dog but my friends and sisters thought it best if I did. So, I decided to try and get a saluki, a breed which I have loved since I was 10 years old. I asked around, not thinking that I would get any response, and left it in God's hands. Within a week I had three offers and I chose Melian. While I will never forget my Tiny girl, I know that this is the beginning of another wonderful relationship and I know that Tiny would approve. My heart is with Tiny but there is a hole in it waiting to be filled by Melian. Hi Well I didn't get into too much trouble this week. I did pee on the floor at mom's office. I was barking and barking but no paid any attention to me. Mom was seeing patients, so I had no choice, when you gotta go you gotta go. So I did it right there on the floor. Now they know that when I bark I have to go outside!!! Mom yelled at me 2 days in a row at dinner time. She fed me and Faith, side by side, and when I was finished with my dinner and just moved over and put my face into Faith's bowl and ate with her. She didn't even try to bite me. I guess maybe she thought I was the Original Hope. Mom saw me do this so she yelled at me to get out of there and that I had my dinner and I don't get seconds!!! So I moved away, then got to finish Faith's left overs. And you know what?, it was sooo good the first time I thought that I might try it again the next day. I did and I got caught again. I tell you, Mommie must have eyes in the back of her head! Today Mommie was outside with that power washer again. She was out there for 3 hours and her face got beat red from the heat. Then her sister and cousin came over to swim in the pool so they took turns power washing the fence. I tried to scale the fence to get at that dang water coming out of the nozzle. Didn't know I could jump so high. Then the Original Hope's boyfriend (Tucker) came over to swim in the pool. Mom put me in the pool Saturday but I got out as soon as I could. I didn't like it. Tucker's daddy picked me up and put me in the pool and you know what?? I STILL DIDN'T LIKE IT. Hey tried everything to get me to go in on my own but I wasn't having any part of it. I did growl meanly at the rafts floating in the pool and when my aunt Debby picked it up and ran backwards into the deck while still growling. Mom didn't come into the house until 6 pm and I know she is tired because I got tired just watching her. Well that's all for now, hope you all have a good night. Hi Sweet Melian. Happy Memorial Day! Mom and I just got home from our visit to Paulette's house. It was so sad without Chey and Chip, but we kept her busy, and helped her with lots of things around the house and yard. Hope you all are enjoying he weekend, and left you all you votes...I sure wish I could play with the baby goats, but I was doing really well with Paulette's 4 cats. Mom is so happy that I have no prey drive. I've never been around cats until meet Paulette's kitties, and I do really well. We were so sad we had to leave. happy Memorial Day Weekend look at those babies!! love them!! Well it looks like we have fallen off the face of the earth. But we didn’t. and of course it is all mom’s fault. She has had a tough time this last week. Way too hot for her brain to work right. Ok I know it never works right, but you know what I mean. We have had a busy week too. we will try to do better this week, but until the heat breaks I am not so sure. mom’s sisnlaw had a pacemaker put in on Thursday. She is doing really well and getting better every day. opa was told on Wednesday that they are outsourcing his job. So his last day is next Thursday. Not much notice and not too happy about that. he is actually retired from the air guard, but he loved going to work 3 days a week. Oh well. the other day me, mom and oma were out and about. Some crazy lady started screaming at us that oma had hit her car. she was crazy. We never touched her car. she ran out saying we put a dent in her passenger side door without ever even looking at it. mom was not happy. but we will let the insurance handle that. the a/c in the garage went out. that is where the big dogs are when it is hot or cold. They have a big pen and a big person mattress and stuff in there. so a new and bigger one was bought. Yesterday opa and oma picked up 2 pork boston butts. I couldn’t have any, pooh. But they had a bunch for the big dogs. Well mom made a mistake and gave Baby Louie and Jennie too much. today they both have really upset tummies. I got to the library park once and the church field a few times last week. Mom says we will not be going to the library park until school is back in though. the kids are there during the day, they have summer stuff for them. mom says it would not be fun for us, so the church field is where we will go for the summer. Too hot tomorrow to do anything though. I guess that is about it for us. Sorry we haven’t been around, but here we are. Dropping off a bunch of shredded pork and some cheesy bread for you. wishing you an awesome night and a fabulous tomorrow. remembering all those that have given so much for us to have our freedom. Hi Melian and Mama..... Well we had an exciting beginning to the holiday weekend. Daddy ended up in the emergency room!! What happened was Daddy had a regular appt w/his kidney doctor on Friday. When he got there he took his blood pressure more than once & it was never higher than 80/60. His kidney levels were very high & he was having trouble breathing. Anyway it all indicated dehydration so he sent Daddy to the emergency room. Two bags of fluids later, a battery of tests, blood work & a breathing treatment he was sent home. We got home about 6:30pm. Anyway he is feeling better & we have a bp cuff that we have monitored his bp & its pretty normal. One time at the hospital it was 66/42!!! He's off his bp meds until we see his cardiologist on Tues. So that is our sad tale of woe my friend. He got an inhaler by prescription & he seems less congested & he is still on antibiotics for now. Daddy is getting better and for that we are so grateful. We're so sorry we weren't here for it, we were celebrating Memorial Day at Caddo lake and by the time we got home it was bed time so we didn't get to check our blogs! Thank you so much guys!
