How We Met?
I planned on getting an older dog. Preferably one who was house-trained. I didn't want to have to deal with a puppy - the house-training, the chewing, the messes. So I went to the Humane Society to look at adult dogs.
To get to the adult dogs, I had to walk through the puppy room. Cute and adorable, who can't resist a puppy? And then I saw him in a cage by himself, scrappy and scruffy. While the other puppies whimpered and yipped, he simply looked at me, head cocked, as if he were checking me out.
I looked at all the adult dogs, taking some out on the leash. There were so many to choose from, so many needing a good home. But something drew me back to the puppy room.
The info sheet said he was a 14-week-old, mixed-breed small terrier, and they called him Sand because of his coloring. I took him out of his crate and was rewarded immediately with a big doggy kiss. He was perfect, but I was still unsure about adopting a puppy. As my mother always says, if you have doubts, sleep on it.
I took a couple pictures with my iPhone and headed home. I thought about him all afternoon and evening. The next morning, I knew I had to have him and his name would be Dexter.
I adopted Dexter at the beginning of September and he has been the best dog ever.
