. Good afternoon Molly, and Welcome to Anchorage!! Here you will find first-class dog-friendly hotels and quaint B&B's, four-star restaurants and small cafes, an outstanding Museum of History and Art and a multitude of other fun activities. It's a great place to get ready to fish, hunt, climb and camp. :•:•:•:•:•:•:•:•:•:•:•: Alaska is one-fifth the size of the continental US; so you won't see it all in one visit. Start with Anchorage. Base your expedition here, summer or winter, and do your exploring from Anchorage. Wedged between the two arms of Cook Inlet and the imposing Chugach Mountains, Anchorage is home to over forty percent of Alaska's population and is the state's transport hub. A sprawling city on the edge of one of the world's great wildernesses, it often gets bad press from those who live elsewhere in the state and deride it as "just half an hour from the real Alaska." However, it has its attractions and, with its beautiful setting, can make a pleasant one- or two-day stopover. :•:•:•:•:•:•:•:•:•:•:•: Anchorage was born in 1915 as a tent city for Alaska Railroad construction workers. During the 1930s, hopefuls fleeing the Depression poured in from the Lower 48, and World War II – and construction of the Alaska Highway – further boosted the city. The opening of the airport established Anchorage – midway between New York and Tokyo – as the "Crossroads of the World," and statehood in 1959 and the 1970s oil boom brought in yet more optimistic adventurers. :•:•:•:•:•:•:•:•:•:•:•: When you are exploring the great outdoors, don’t forget to spend time exploring the great indoors. The wide variety of products available in Anchorage means your suitcase should go home just a little, or a lot, heavier than when you arrive. You’ll find there is something for the most dedicated shopper, the one who’s just along to hold the purse and everyone who falls somewhere in between. No sales tax is an added benefit, and most of the local gift shops will ship purchases around the world. If any of you "unacclimated" poochies forgot to pack a sweater (you know, in your excitedness, hehe) today would be a good time to pick one out at the many unique Alaska sweater & parka shops. :•:•:•:•:•:•:•:•:•:•:•: Now that the chauffeur (myself, bol) has driven us to the Anchorage Museum of History and Art, let us hear some fun facts about Alaska from our tour guide, Peaksters......Peaka: "Thank you, bro. Tour members, here you can trace 10,000 years of history, from the formation of towering peaks to dinosaurs and mammo-" Y: "The FACTS, Peaka"....P: "Oh right, hehe...." ★ Point Barrow is the northernmost point in U.S.A. ★ The speedy Siberian Husky was brought to Alaska in 1909. ★ Alaska's state bird, the willow ptarmigan, is white in the winter and brown in the summer. ★ The aurora borealis is the northern-light display that brightens the 24-hour winter nights. In the summer, Alaska is the land of the midnight sun. ★ Alaska is almost 1/5 as large as the rest of the U.S.A. ★ Endangered humpback whales are often seen in summer off Alaska's coast, where cold arctic waters provide plenty of rich plankton to eat. ★ The Sitka Spruce is the state tree of Alaska. ★ Cedar totem poles of NW coastal tribes are sometimes 80 feet tall. ★ Kodiak Island is home to the largest brown bears on earth. ★ Horned puffins fish off the Western-Alaskan Aleutian Islands. ★ The state flower of Alaska is the forget-me-not".........Y: "Thank you, Peaka :) Tour members, after a day in the town of exploring, sightseeing (for the sighthounds ;P) and trail sniffin', we'll head back to our hotel at the Microtel Inn and Suites located at 5205 Northwood Drive. Get a good sleep cause tomorrow dad flies in his plane to Anchorage to pick us up! :) :•:•:•:•:•: Thank You :•:•:•:•:•: so very much for your support, dear DC friends. Here's a vote for you and we hope you're enjoying the tour so far! Big hugs from a big guy (hehehe) ☆ ★ ☆ Yukon ☆ ★ ☆ P.S. Snapshots from our tour of Anchorage, along with a few from previous winter-time flyovers, can be viewed on the new tour members fun page! • • • #235583 • • •

. :•:•:•:•:•:•:•:•: Hi pretty girl Molly! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the support you have given me for my DOTM run. This morning I had to rub my eyes and *blink blink blink* when I saw my very own face looking at me through the DOTD window. Mom and I were touched beyond words!! Because I haven't been able to be very active on DC lately, I didn't expect so many to remember me. Mom and I were very sorry not to be diligently sending messages throughout the first week of my run, and we felt really bad about it. We have been looking so forward to this for a long, long time, and we wanted to send thank-yous every day. But some things came up that Mommy had to take care of. Now Peaka keeps teasing me about how she started off her run last year, and how mom helped her blog every day from the start. But I guess I'll have to forgive them both :) It sure is embarrassing that on the 9th day of the month, I'm telling you what my "theme" is.......you're probably thinking, "What, 'Dogs going MIA?'"....BOL!!! But maybe my profile photo was a hint? Okay enough of that, (now Peaka's really sending me strange looks, hehe)....... I would like to take you on a tour of our favorite place in the world, our home state: Alaska!......The name conjures up adventure, raw natural beauty -- glaciers, mountains and seas, unmatched the world around -- fascinating wildlife, a unique cultural heritage, and independent, pioneering people. There are no roads in much of Alaska, so to really get out and see many of the "The Great Land"s special places, you need an airplane and an experienced pilot. That's why 1 in 68 people in Alaska do exactly that....fly airplanes! And we are proud that our very own daddy is a pilot :) Having a plane of your own enables you to do a lot of cool stuff! But airplanes in AK aren't just fun and games. Many off-road villages located in Alaska completely depend on the pilots for delivery of food, fuel, and other necessities for every day life. Also, there is a large number of fishing lodge businesses located in the wilderness of Alaska, and every one of them relies on its planes. Our family owns and operates a lodge like this: Alaska's Fishing Unlimited. You can learn more about our unique fishing adventures at our website: AlaskaLodge.com. On this special tour for DC friends, Dad would be thrilled to fly you in one of our planes. As you venture north, Anchorage will provide the ideal gateway to most of what Alaska offers. If you would like to join us on this Great Alaskan Tour, please meet us at the Anchorage Airport in Anchorage, AK, Thursday, August 10th. Since this is a virtual tour, I don't think you'll mind the short notice too much ;) Thank you again, so very much, for the outstanding support I have received. You are just the best friends I could ever have!! :) Hugs, prayers, and a vote from your very grateful friend, Yukon ^..^ P.S.....Now for the important stuff!! hehehe....Brought you a big ol' tray of frosted doggy bone-shaped cupcakes and some yummy salmon punch. Enjoy!........oh yeah, and complements of my silly sis Peaka (don't worry, it's safe to eat, Bol)
