Rescue Dogs and Behavior

Many adopted dogs were relinquished for a variety of reasons that were no fault of the animal.

By Joanne Yohannan
SVP, Shelter Operations, North Shore Animal League America

Q. Do adopted dogs have behavior problems?

A. On the contrary, many dogs in animal shelters and with rescue groups are perfectly well-mannered dogs that were relinquished for a variety of reasons that really were no fault of the animal. Some shelters and rescue groups provide training and basic behavior lessons for the dogs in their care in an effort to prepare them for permanent placement in new and loving homes. There can be behavioral challenges with any dog regardless of where you get it.  The key to a successful and long-term relationship is patience and persistence. Remember, once your dog is properly socialized and trained, you will have a best friend for life.

We adopted a dog Miss Rain, I have taken her to classes and worked with her but we still have an issue with other dogs and kids. Our morning walks are a joy we are out before anyone is up 5-5:30AM and it is so enjoyable but the when I get home and we walk she will cry, bark and her nose is on the ground that some nights I just turn her around and go home because she is uncontrolable. She is not home alone Dick is retired and home with her most days. I took her to day care and they sent her home after three weeks because she didn't want to be with other dogs she wanted to be with people and was to needy. Do you have any helpful hints to deal with these issues?

Rescued dogs are not always easy to train. I've always adopted shelter dogs. My current one is a 3-4 yr old Shephard/pit bull (?) mix. Great at home. Loveable. Walking is the problem. She goes crazy when another dog comes near and it takes all my strength to control her. She is attending obedience classes and the trainer as suggested private classes as she is impossible around the other dogs.

So very true, we have several rescues and most of the it is jus the adjustment period that is a little hard and then things are just fine.
