Sasha’s Bush Buddies
|

For about a month now, Sasha has been fascinated by the bushes outside our home. More accurately, she has been fascinated by something inside the bushes. I say this because every time we go outside for a potty break, she spends most of the time running around all sides of the bushes to investigate her new friends.
She routinely stands at the edge of the bushes, then quizzically cocks her head from one side to the other when she hears rustling sounds from inside the bush. She will even raise one front paw into the classic pointing position. Sometimes, she’ll pounce into the bush in an attempt to get whatever’s inside, or she’ll run around to another side and repeat the process.

Although I prefer to think that Sasha has found some new friends inside the bush (it just seems so precious!), the better part of me knows that she’s really attempting to hunt whatever animals are inside. And even though I can hear the noise of these creatures scurrying about, I still haven’t been able to see them. Lying on the ground, parting the leaves on the bushes and just watching intently for any signs of movement have brought me nowhere closer to figuring out what Sasha is interested in. My best guess is that lizards have taken up residence in the bushes, and because they move so quickly, I haven’t been able to see them.
Maybe that’s what’s driving Sasha, too: She can hear them, but she can’t see them either. Last Saturday her curiosity must have gotten the best of her, because I suddenly realized that she was nowhere in sight. But I did hear lots of commotion from inside the bush – she had completely burrowed inside it! I could tell that she was thrashing about chasing the lizards or mice or who knows what. If she got something, I’ll never know, but she did emerge after about 30 seconds with a big grin on her face and that same cocked-head look that said “Let’s do that again!”
