AKC/Eukanuba Dog Show Revisited

Norwegian Lundehund

Norwegian Lundehund

The AKC/Eukanuba National Championship dog show was on TV this weekend. I was able to attend this show in Long Beach in December, and seeing the judging brought back memories of one of the most interesting breeds I encountered.

Norwegian Lundehund dogs are different than any dog I have ever seen. They are on the small side, usually only 13 to 15 inches tall. The dogs are very rare, which is probably why I had never seen one before. They have distinct physical characteristics that helped them excel at hunting.

These dogs are polydactyl, which means they have extra toes. They have six toes on each foot, including two dewclaws. This characteristic gives the dogs the ability to climb steep rocks. They use this ability to hunt puffin birds, their specialty. However, the birds are now protected and no longer hunted, but the extra toes remain.

The dogs also have a wonderful disposition. The ones I met at the show were friendly, calm and well behaved. The breeder showing them was great in showing me the breed characteristics and educating me about these wonderful dogs. He let me take some pictures of the dogs. I hope you enjoy seeing their remarkable feet as much as I did.
