What's this?
With a flowing silky coat and exotic features, the Afghan Hound is the model/actress of the dog world, admired for its beauty, grace and flashy style. Sculpted by the harsh terrain and extreme weather conditions of Afghanistan, where the breed was discovered in the early 19th century, this sighthound's widely spaced, freewheeling hip joints enabled it to travel with agility and speed to bring down prey ranging from deer and antelope to wolves and snow leopards. Today, the Afghan Hound is more commonly seen hunting ribbons in the show ring or chasing a lure across a course. This is a large dog, standing about 27 inches at the shoulders. A thorough weekly grooming session will keep its coat shiny and tangle-free. Like most hounds, the Afghan is an independent thinker and quick to lose interest, so training requires patience and consistency. It can live comfortably in a large apartment, as long as its exercise needs are met with one or two daily walks of 20 to 30 minutes each. Don't expect the Afghan to be a top-notch watchdog; this breed is more accustomed to being watched.
