Belgian Tervuren DOG PROFILE

Except for coat color, this breed is similar to its close relative the Belgian Sheepdog: same size (up to 26 inches at the shoulder); same elegant outline; and same long, off-standing double coat, but in shades of red or fawn with a black overlay. Introduced on this continent somewhat later than the Belgian Sheepdog, and once classified as a variety of that breed, the Tervuren has been recognized as a separate breed since 1959. Renowned for its heroic service as a Red Cross and messenger dog during World War I, the Tervuren makes a trustworthy watchdog and family pet. Tervs take well to training and enjoy the challenge of obedience work. They shed heavily, but frequent brushing keeps the richly colored coat immaculate. A brisk daily walk and the pleasure of retrieving a ball keep Tervs in trim condition, and they are easily trained for a variety of activities, from herding to therapy work to sledding.
