What's this?
The Canaan is indigenous to Israel, where it was first used for guarding and herding cattle and sheep. The Israelis have also used the Canaan Dog for guard duties, as mine detectors during war times, as messengers and as Red Cross helpers. They possess extremely keen senses of hearing and smell, and they can detect approaching intruders from a considerable distance, becoming instantly alert. They are an intelligent, trainable breed whose performance ability is excellent. When raised with children and other pets, they become devoted family companions and natural watchdogs. They do not require an excessive amount of exercise. This medium-size, squarely built dog has a bushy tail that is carried over the back. Their weight is 35 to 55 pounds upon maturity. The coat is medium length, harsh and straight, and requires little grooming. Color may be white with a mask and black or brown markings, or solid in varying shades of brown or black with white trim on chest or feet.
