Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dogs

A small sporting spaniel that was popular in the 17th century, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel fell out of favor after the reign of Charles II. The type began to be revived in 1926 when American Roswell Eldridge visited Britain looking for dogs like those he had seen in the paintings of Charles II's time. As none were to be found, he offered monetary prizes to be awarded at Britain's prestigious Crufts Dog Show to the male and female most closely resembling the original King Charles Spaniels. British breeders accepted the challenge and by 1945 the recreated breed had arrived. The Cavalier measures up to 13 inches at the shoulder and weighs up to 18 pounds, so it is at home in any environment, from apartment to mansion. The Cavalier's coat is long and silky, with daily grooming necessary to prevent tangles. Colors may be white with chestnut markings, all red, tricolor or black and tan. The breed is moderately active and will be satisfied with one or two short walks or playtimes each day.
