What's this?
The "Lassie dog" has been described as a clever worker that responded to the shepherd's commands, herding sheep and driving them to market. Collies come in two distinct coat types: rough and smooth. The rough coat is abundant except on the head and legs. The outercoat is straight and harsh, and a short, soft, furry undercoat provides warmth. The rough coat needs frequent, thorough brushing to remove dead hair and to keep the undercoat free of mats. Seasonal shedding can be a problem indoors. The smooth coat is short with a hard outer coat and a thick undercoat. Four colors are acceptable for either variety: sable and white, tricolor, blue merle and white. The breed is loyal, kind and easy to train. Collies need regular outdoor exercise but are happy to share small quarters. They love children and are excellent watchdogs.
