Dalmatian DOG PROFILE

The Dalmatian is famous for its spots, which gave rise to some of its nicknames, among them Plum Pudding Dog, Spotted Dick and Firehouse Dog. The latter nickname arose because its heritage as a carriage dog made it a natural choice as a firehouse mascot in the days of horse-drawn fire wagons. As a working member of the fire brigade, the Dal helped find and rescue fire victims. Some of the breed's other talents included drafting, ratting and performing as a circus dog. The Dal is a medium-sized, elegant, highly active family pet and watchdog. The desirable height of dogs and bitches is between 19 and 23 inches at the withers. Dalmatians are born white, then develop their distinctive spots. Occasionally one is born with a solid patch, which disqualifies it as a show dog but not as a pet. The coat is short, fine, close-fitting and glossy in white, with black or liver spots. A vigorous rubdown about three times a week takes care of grooming needs. The Dalmatian is protective of home and family and prefers living in a large home with plenty of safe running room. This breed enjoys long daily walks or runs and makes a good partner for a long-distance jogger.
