Finnish Spitz DOG PROFILE

When most people see a Finnish Spitz for the first time, they comment that it looks just like a fox. The dog's solid red-gold coat shading from pale honey to deep auburn is largely responsible for this comparison, as is the breed's characteristic spitz appearance: broad skull, pointed muzzle, prick ears, dense double coat and bushy tail. The Finnish Spitz is the national dog of Finland, where it was used as a natural bark pointer for hunting small game and game birds. The breed is of medium size, rugged enough for an outdoor sporting companion but small enough to be a house pet. A lively companion, the Finnish Spitz is a faithful dog that loves children and is an excellent watchdog. While extremely intelligent, this dog is often self-willed, so training should focus on rewarding desirable behavior rather than punishing undesirable acts. The Finnish Spitz stands no more than 20 inches at the shoulder. Its coat sheds moderately and needs a weekly brush-out.
