This tough little Irish scrapper takes its name from its place of origin in County Wicklow. The breed was developed to be used against badgers and foxes, and its courage is legendary. Unlike many other terriers, the Glen of Imaal works quietly, keeping silent even when facing an adversary as formidable as a badger. Though standing only 14 inches high, the Glen of Imaal is a short-legged heavy-boned dog with a substantial chest and strong hindquarters. A male may weigh as much as 35 pounds, every ounce packed with gameness. This terrier wears a harsh, easy-care coat of blue, brindle, or wheaten. The Irish Kennel Club gave the breed an official nod in 1933.
