Irish Terrier DOG PROFILE

The Irish Terrier is nicknamed Daredevil for the reckless fire of its personality. Once called the Irish Sporting Terrier, this breed was used as a ratter and guard dog as well as to flush and retrieve game. The Irish Terrier stands about 18 inches at the shoulder, weighs up to 27 pounds and is a neat, workmanlike fellow that makes a fine pet for most homes. The coat is hard and wiry with a soft undercoat. Although it should be hand stripped to maintain the coat's correct texture, the chore is far less taxing with the Irish than with most terrier breeds. With practice it's possible to maintain a coat by raking weekly with a stripping knife to remove loose, dead hair. Active and alert, the Irish Terrier enjoys a couple of daily walks and is made to be a child's playmate. This breed is easy to train, and its terrier attentiveness makes it an excellent watchdog.
