What's this?
The Irish Wolfhound is a paradox. Behind its powerful and commanding appearance is the gentlest of dogs, extremely fond of children yet courageous in the commission of any tasks. Because of its great size, a minimum of 32 inches at the shoulder for adult males, this is not the ideal breed for every home. The Irish Wolfhound needs space, indoors and out. Its rough double coat, in colors of gray brindle, red, fawn, black or white, needs weekly brushing. While its size makes it appear menacing, the Wolfhound is not a suspicious or aggressive dog, so its qualities as a guard or watchdog are limited. This is a calm, dignified breed that loves being with its family. Although Wolfhounds are loving and gentle with children, their large size means they can inadvertently step on or knock down a toddler, so a home with older children is best. A daily walk or two will keep this moderately active dog happy. Wolfhounds are sensitive, intelligent dogs that respond best to a light hand in training.
