Lakeland Terrier DOG PROFILE

Typical of terriers everywhere, the stylish Lakeland has a confident, cock-of-the-walk attitude, not surprising in a descendant of working terriers bred to kill fox and other vermin that preyed on farmers' lambs and poultry in Britain's border county of Cumberland. Tough, brave and agile, the Lakeland is slender enough to follow its quarry through narrow crevices. The breed was originally known by a variety of names depending on where it was being bred. Aliases include Patterdale, Fell, Cumberland and Westmoreland Terrier. The Lakeland Terrier stands 14.5 inches at the shoulder and weighs 17 pounds. The double, hard, dense coat doesn't shed much and comes in a variety of colors from black to wheaten. Grooming is required about three times a week to maintain coat texture and styling. The Lakeland is hardy and active. It makes a good watchdog and an interesting companion. Every Lakeland should be walked on lead daily. The Lakey has the short attention span common to terriers, so keep training sessions brief and fun but frequent, and don't let this dog get the upper paw.
