The Maremma Sheepdog has all of the attributes essential for an effective guard: strength, independence, stamina, courage and a strong sense of "ownership." This Italian flock guard bears a strong resemblance to the Kuvasz, and the two breeds probably share the same ancient origin. The Maremma, highly regarded as a guardian of both flock and home, takes its job seriously. This is a powerful dog weighing 65 to 100 pounds and standing 23.5 to 29 inches high. Because of the Maremma's strong guarding instinct, it is extremely important that owner and dog develop a healthy mutual respect early in the relationship. The white coat is profuse and long, never curly, and should be brushed two or three times a week. It is an independent dog that enjoys plenty of exercise and is best suited to a country home.
