Mastiff Profile |
Sometimes known as the Old English Mastiff, this giant breed has been known for centuries as a war dog, hunter, estate guardian and blood sport combatant, but today it is a gentle companion and valiant protection dog. The Mastiff stands 30 or more inches at the shoulder; females 2.5 inches less. The coat is short and dense in shades of apricot, silver fawn or dark fawn-brindle, all with darker muzzle, ears and nose. A vigorous weekly brushing is all the grooming necessary. While it might appear to be estate-size, the Mastiff doesn't require a castle for its living quarters. It's perfectly happy in a large suburban home with a yard, preferably with children to play with and watch over. The Mastiff is a superb watchdog, capable of putting fear into the heart of any wrongdoer with its sheer size alone. This is a moderately active breed that will be satisfied with a one- or two-mile daily walk. Keep hand towels available, because this breed drools.
