Miniature Schnauzer Profile

The Miniature Schnauzer has bounced its way into the hearts and lives of thousands of admirers who love it for its engaging personality. The most popular terrier breed, the Miniature Schnauzer is of German origin and was developed in the 1890s by crossing small specimens of the Standard Schnauzer with the Miniature Pinscher or the Affenpinscher. Intelligent and easily trained, it does well in obedience, and on the home front it makes a super watchdog that is devoted to its family. The Miniature Schnauzer's size, up to 14 inches at the shoulder for either sex, is well-suited to any home, city or country. Its non-shedding coat makes this the perfect choice for people who suffer from allergies. The coat may be solid black, or black and gray with silver-white furnishings. The breed needs combing about three times a week to keep the beard and leg furnishings tangle-free, and professional grooming attention to maintain that Schnauzer look. The Miniature Schnauzer is a great playmate for children who can match its high energy level.

(Editor's Note: Miniature Schnauzers shorter than 12 inches or taller than 14 inches will be disqualified in the AKC show ring, as will be solid white coats or those with white stripes, patches or spotting, except a small white chest spot allowed on black coats.)
