Norwich Terrier DOG PROFILE

Like its drop-eared sibling the Norfolk, the Norwich Terrier is game and hardy, a fun-loving family pet. This working terrier of East Anglia originated during the 19th century and was probably developed by crossing small specimens of the Irish Terrier with other short-legged terrier breeds. A favorite with Cambridge University students, the little dogs were once known as Cantab Terriers. Originally the Norwich name covered both the drop- and prick-eared varieties, but in 1963 they were reclassified, and the prick-eared retained the name Norwich Terrier. This little dog measures just 10 inches at the shoulder. The coat is hard, wiry and double in shades of red, wheaten, black and tan, or grizzle. It does take some handwork to maintain correct shape and texture, but far less than the average hard-coated terrier breed. This is a fine little watchdog, always ready to announce the approach of strangers but not given to needless barking. The Norwich fits neatly into the smallest home and its exercise needs are easily met.
