Pembroke Welsh Corgi DOG PROFILE

Even without much of a tail, the Pembroke Corgi boldly expresses its affection and interest in people. This is a smart house dog whose alert and vigilant nature makes it a fine family companion and watchdog. The Pembroke is thought to be a later development of the Cardigan variety, probably by crosses to small, spitz-type dogs brought to Pembrokeshire, Wales, in the 12thcentury by Flemish weavers. The Pembroke has always enjoyed greater popularity than the Cardigan, even when the two varieties were shown as a single breed, and it even gained royal favor. In 1933, the Duke of York, later King George VI, bought a Pembroke puppy for his daughters. Later, a mate was added, and it is descendants of this original pair that are pets of the royal family today. The Pembroke, which measures from 10 to 12 inches at the shoulder, has its tail docked as short as possible. The coat is medium long in red, sable, fawn or black and tan, with or without white markings. Brushing three times a week keeps it shiny and clean, but be prepared for lots of shedding. The Pembroke fits well into any home provided it is given plenty of outdoor exercise.
