Pharaoh Hound Profile

This is the only breed that blushes. When the Pharaoh Hound is happy or excited, its nose and ears turn a deep rose color. This lightly built, elegant member of the Greyhound family originated in Egypt, where it was described as the red, long-tailed dog, but it was developed in the Mediterranean islands of Malta and Gozo. The breed was used to hunt hare and rabbit as well as feathered game, and is unusual among gazehounds because it hunts by scent as well as by sight. In the 1920s the breed was first imported to Britain and, because of its resemblance to artistic representations of the Egyptian dog god Anubis, was given the name Pharaoh Hound. The male Pharaoh Hound measures 22 to 25 inches at the shoulder, females 1 inch less. The coat is short and glossy, in rich tan or chestnut with some white markings. Eyes, nose and pigmentation of lips and eye rims blend with the coat color. A home with a fenced yard is the best choice for this speedy breed. The Pharaoh Hound needs lots of daily exercise but only weekly brushing to keep the coat glossy. It's affectionate and playful with the whole family and makes an excellent watchdog. Smile when you see a Pharaoh Hound, and it'll probably smile back.
