Pomeranian Profile

An inquisitive extrovert, the Pomeranian makes friends wherever it goes. It's the smallest member of the spitz family of dogs, with the characteristic prick ears, a pointed muzzle and a plumed tail carried over the back. The breed takes its name from Pomerania, once a part of Germany. Imported to Britain during Queen Victoria's reign, the first specimens weighed up to 30 pounds and were not an instant success. However, after a few generations of selective breeding, English breeders succeeded in miniaturizing the Pom and producing replicas of the original. They weighed from 3 to 7 pounds and came in a wide variety of colors. Pomeranians became and remain one of the most popular toy breeds. This is a dainty, profusely coated little dog that needs gentle daily brushing to keep it mat-free. The Pom makes an ideal house pet and watchdog for adults who must spend a lot of time indoors and can give the dog the attention it loves.
