Puli DOG STATS

Country of Origin: The Puli is thought to have originated in central Asia and was brought to Hungary by the Magyars about 1,000 years ago.
Group: Herding
Use today: Herding trials
Life Span: 10-15 years
Color: Black, reddish black, gray or white
Coat: Hangs in long, distinctive cords
Grooming: In late puppyhood, the Puli coat needs to be pulled apart with the fingers – get your breeder to help you! – into cords which will continue to grow. With a mature coat, your biggest challenge is keeping the dog clean and free of debris (including leaves and twigs). After a bath, it can take an entire day and several powerful hair dryers to dry a Puli thoroughly. If this is not done, the cords can mildew.
Height: 14 to 18 inches at the shoulder.
Weight: 25-35 lbs

Puli DOG PROFILE

The Puli moves with a bouncy gait, a physical manifestation of its active, alert temperament. This keen, quick dog is thought to have originated in central Asia and was brought to Hungary by the Magyars about 1,000 years ago. For centuries the dogs worked outdoors in the rural areas, in all weather, as dependable guardians of flocks of sheep. The long double coat, which tends to form natural cords, provided insulation from extreme weather and protected the dogs in case of attack by predators. Valued for their working ability, little attention was given to the Puli as a purebred or as a show dog until the end of the 19th century, when biologists and veterinarians combined forces. They researched the breed's history, set up breeding records and succeeded in establishing it as a native Hungarian breed. Agile and active, the Puli measures from 14 to 18 inches at the shoulder. The profuse coat, which may be black, reddish black, gray or white, cloaks the body with tight, even cords and requires daily grooming. The tail is curled and carried over the back. The breed makes a loyal family pet and excellent watchdog, happiest in country settings, where its lively temperament has room for expression.
