Scottish Deerhound DOG PROFILE

If you're looking for a quiet, dignified hound that will be loving, loyal and courageous, you can't do better than to consider the Scottish Deerhound, a shaggy-coated Greyhound type. Renowned for its courage on the hunt, the breed was a favorite of Scottish nobility until the collapse of the clan system in 1745. The breed was further popularized by royal patronage, the painter Landseer and Sir Walter Scott, who wrote that his pet Deerhound was "the most perfect creature of heaven." The breed stands more than 30 inches at the shoulder and always seems to comport itself as a true aristocrat. The shaggy coat may be any shade of gray, yellow, sandy red or fawn. White markings on the chest and toes are permissible but a white blaze on the head or a white collar is frowned upon. Weekly brushing keeps the coat free of dead hair. Like all Greyhound clan members, the Deerhound likes its outdoor exercise, which is safest in an enclosed area. Once this sighthound takes off after something, you won't be able to catch it.
