Skye Terrier Profile

Peeking out from behind its hair are the Skye's lively, intelligent eyes, the windows to a canine soul that is fearless, good-tempered and loyal. Long, lean and lanky are words used to describe this Scottish native, which was once called the Terrier of the Western Islands. A working terrier, the Skye was used for tracking otter, badger and weasel. In its off hours, it often enjoyed life as the favored house pet of the Scottish lairds. The breed is depicted in several paintings of the famed artist Sir Edwin Landseer, and gained public attention through the patronage of Queen Victoria. By the turn of the century, the Skye was well established in Britain and North America. Never overpopularized, the Skye retains a faithful following throughout the world. Ears may be either drop or prick. Ideal height for males is 10 inches at the shoulder, females a half-inch less. The overall length of body should be twice the height. The breed's standard also says that the coat, which is parted down the back, must be at least 5.5 inches in length and hang flat and straight against the body. It may be any color from black to cream, preferably with dark muzzle, ears and tail tip. Daily brushing is the only grooming needed. Exercise needs are moderate, making it a fine choice for city life. While a good watchdog and loyal companion, the Skye Terrier exhibits a rather aloof temperament, so it's best suited to families that aren't looking for a rambunctious playmate for the children.
