Tibetan Spaniel Profile

Smart, sweet and trusting of other dogs and people, the Tibetan Spaniel has a long history as a companion. It was bred in the monasteries of Tibet and used as a watchdog and bed warmer. Its nickname of "little lion" symbolized Buddha's triumph over violence and aggression. Given as annual tribute to China, the breed then came to Europe via the Silk Route in the Han Dynasty, to become the ancestor of many other small breeds known today. The Tibetan Spaniel was introduced to Britain in 1898 where it is well established and extremely popular as a family pet. This is a small, active, intelligent companion dog measuring about 10 inches at the shoulder and weighing 9 to 15 pounds, so it's a great fit for any size home. The silky double coat is moderately long on the body. The richly plumed tail is carried in a curl over the back. All colors and mixtures of colors are acceptable. The Tibetan Spaniel should be thoroughly brushed out at least once a week, but a daily grooming is better. A Tibetan Spaniel will sing with your doorbell, announcing all new arrivals. This is a good choice for those who fancy dogs with the Oriental look. The Tibetan Spaniel enjoys exercise and should have a daily walk. When you can't find your Tibetan, look up; these dogs enjoy sitting on high places.
