Tibetan Terrier DOG PROFILE

If you enjoy snowshoeing and other winter sports, consider a Tibetan Terrier. The breed has an unusual foot structure, which permits the dog to travel easily on snow. Said to have originated in the Lost Valley of Tibet, this breed was regarded as a holy dog by the lamas and a symbol of good luck. The breed is not a true terrier in that it does not go to ground for its quarry. Rather, it may have been used as a sheepherder in ancient times. These dogs were never sold but given as gifts. It was as such a gift that the first Tibetan Terriers came into the possession of Dr. A.R.H. Greig, who was practicing medicine in India. In the 1930s, Dr. Greig introduced the breed to Britain and founded Lamleh Kennels. The Tibetan Terrier was first imported to North America in 1956 and joined the ranks of the official breeds in the U.S. and Canada in 1973 and 1974, respectively. The breed stands 14 to 16 inches at the shoulder, and weighs 18 to 30 pounds, just right for life in a large apartment or small house. The double coat is profuse and fine. It may be any color, including white. Daily brushing is essential to keep the hair tangle-free. Regardless of coat color, the nose must be black. The breed has a distinctive bark and makes an excellent watchdog. Your Tibetan Terrier will enjoy a daily walk and any activity that it can share with you.
