Xoloitzcuintli DOG PROFILE

Prized as a symbol of goodness and unselfish love, the Xoloizcuintli (show-low-eats-kweent-lee) is one of the world's oldest and rarest breeds. It probably originated in Asia and came to Latin America when native people migrated there. Xolos were present when the Aztecs founded Tenochtitlan. Because of its hairlessness, the dog seems to have a high body temperature, which was once thought to have medicinal value. Historically, it has been used as an aid in treating arthritis, rheumatism and other aches and pains. Of course, the dog makes a great bedwarmer, too. The Xolo comes in three sizes: Toy (up to 13 inches), Miniature (13 to 18 inches) and Standard (18 to 23 inches); and two varieties: hairless and coated. The hairless has only bristly short hairs on its forehead, nape, tail and feet, and the coated variety has a short, flat coat. This breed may be shown in any color, including shades of black, brown, bronze, gray, red and gold, some with lighter spots. Lighter skin will burn or tan when exposed to sunlight, so protect the dog with a shelter or sunscreen. Regular baths and minimal grooming are required, and avoid dry skin by moisturizing with a non-greasy lotion. The Xolo isn't fond of temperature extremes and should be fitted with a sweater to prevent chilling in cold weather. This breed is a housedog, suited to any size quarters, and an active companion whose fearlessness makes it an excellent watchdog.
