Inhalation of solid objects or aspiration of food or water can cause acute airway spasm and mechanical blockage, especially in an animal with a small airway size and lung capacity. Acute allergic reactions such as anaphylaxis can also obstruct air flow and cause severe disruption of cardiopulmonary function.
Spinal trauma, such as rupture of intervertebral disks, can result in paralysis of the diaphragm and suffocation if the disk disease damages responsible areas of the spinal cord.
Many other conditions could have caused Max's sudden expiration, all of them rare and unlikely. We may never know why Max left early. Hopefully, the necropsy will have provided you with the answers you need to ease your mind and heart. Letting go of special friends is especially difficult when we don't know why they left us.
