Whether it's a wildfire in California or a flood across the Midwest, dogs are at risk of being separated from their owners when natural disasters strike.
The California Veterinary Medical Association offers a variety of tips to help owners prepare for the unexpected:
Do not leave dogs behind if you evacuate your home. You might be gone much longer than you think.
Know where the dog-friendly accommodations in your area are located.
Be sure your dog wears proper identification, preferably tags partnered with a microchip.
Assemble an emergency kit in a waterproof bag.
Have a dog carrier or leash readily accessible in case of an emergency evacuation.
If you have no choice but to leave your pet, put your dogs and cats in separate rooms, preferably without windows. Leave enough food and water for at least 48 hours, and post a notice outside that tells rescue workers what pets are inside and how to contact you.
If your dog becomes lost during a natural disaster, visit your local animal shelter at least every other day. Bring a photo and records to identify your dog.
