New Hope for Senior Dogs

'Senile' dogs may get a second chance.

No other medications are approved for treating cognitive dysfunction in the United States. As research progresses on cognitive dysfunction in dogs and Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia in humans, other CDS treatments should become available. Nicergoline, a drug that increases cerebral blood flow, is available in the United Kingdom for treating dogs' age-related behavioral disorders - and one day may be available here. Gingko, antioxidants and other compounds purported to help maintain brain function have yet to be proven.

Meanwhile, owners can help prevent mental deterioration in older dogs through ongoing activities. "People can engage their dog in activities that stimulate mental function." said Dr. Horwitz. She suggests taking the dog for exploratory walks where it can use all its five senses. Daily play sessions and continuous training also help keep older dogs vital and active. "The concept of use-it-or-lose-it applies here," she said.

So why not teach that old dog some new tricks? It's for his own good.

I almost forgot to say that Babe is back on her Metacam because it does not interfer with this medicine & she is running, jumping, playing, eating & behaving just as if she was young again.Even her hair stopped falling out. We hope that everyone has a Vet that will talk to them about this & that they make as good a decision about the QUALITY of Life issue as we did.Quality of life was number one on the list of what we would & could do to make our little senior girl have the best of the rest of her life for no matter how long she lives. And this to us was the best answer. Thanks for covering the subject so well since no one else really has.

QUALITY of life was the most important item for us when it came to deciding what to do about Babe. This was the answer. Thank you so much.

This article could not have come at a better time.We just moved from Chgo, Il. to Spring Hill,Fl & our girl Babe who is 12 1/2 yrs. old was diagnosed with geriatric synovial disease within a wk. of our moving. Then she broke a molar & had to be sedated during which time the Vet realized that she had lot's of problems with her old age.We stopped giving her Metacam for her arthritis, put her on L-Deprenyl for a week until the Anipryl came in & within 2 wks. she is like a new girl again. Thanks for all the info that you have given us regarding this subject plus what our Vet told us. We hope that more people listen to this & understand that they don't have to put their babies DOWN just because they have it.
