The Dapple Dachshund

“Dapple” refers to a dog’s coat pattern rather than to a specific color.

Q. I would like to know what does “dappled” mean when it comes to the coloring of a Dachshund?

A. Dapple is a mottled coat-color pattern in which black patches appear over a lighter-colored background. Dapple refers to the pattern rather than to a specific color. Dachshunds can come in silver or red dapple, and the pattern corresponds to the merle we see in Collies, Shelties and Australian Shepherds.
