Possible Yeast Infection on Dog's Mouth

Spots near dog’s mouth may look like mold but its most likely from a yeast infection.

By Jon Geller, DVM

Q. My 8-year-old Cocker Spaniel’s groomer thinks my dog has mold. She has brown markings (mostly spots) around her mouth and near her eyes. What is dog mold? How did Abbey get it? What do I need to do to eliminate it?

A. Wow, I have heard of a salty dog, but never a moldy dog! Your groomer has either discovered a new type of skin disease, or (more likely) may be passing along some misinformation. Her intentions are undoubtedly noble, but her sources may be flawed. Veterinarians spend a fair amount of time dealing with canine urban legends often spread via the Internet. “Dog mold” is not a recognized condition.

The closest thing to “mold spots” might be a yeast infection, a form of fungus or mold. Yeast infections usually only are found in the ear canals or between the toes, where they cause itchiness. They can have a brownish appearance if severe enough.

If your dog has true changes in the color of her skin coat, they may be harmless pigment changes or evidence of underlying disease. Most likely they are not related to her diet. If they aren’t bothering her, don’t be overly concerned. But schedule her annual visit with your veterinarian early this year to get them checked out.

To Candace, with the Westies. Try Hill's Presription diet z/d food in low allergen. I had the same problem with my chow mix and after a year of every test, it turned out to be a combination of a protein allergy and IBS. The food worked within a week and he is healthy and happy now.

I have two Westies - (ages 4 and 5 yrs.) One has had GI problems for half of his life - constant diarrhea - I have worked with several vets trying to find someone who can help improve his quality of life. I have tried raw food diets - pumpkin - high quality food (Evo) - prescription food - - he has been on Flagyl for 2 years - we've tried steriods -probiotics -prebiotics - NOTHING has helped this litte guy. His weight is dropping - does anyone have any suggestions?

My dog was diagnosed by the vet with a yeast infection on the side of his mouth. He is a mix with lab dominate. It appears as dark patches on the outside of his lip where they overlap. We have tried everything to get rid of it with no success. You can actually wipe pieces of it off with a towel and it will be back the next day. We are trying to find a cure as well. We have tried lamisil and several recommentdations. So far nothing has worked.

The article is fine. However, my dog has the yeast infection at the side of his mouth and we have tried apple cider vinegar and lamisil per the vets instruction and neither has worked. We wash and apply twice a day for two months. Any, advice on how to cure this infections.
