Dog toys can get expensive, especially if you have dogs that tear them up to get the squeaker out. If you make them yourself, you can save money and repurpose any non-punctured squeakers your dog has "gutted.”
Not a sewer? Don’t worry! I am going to show you two types of easy to make squeaker dog toys, one of which is no-sew! Sew…you have NO excuses to not try these fun projects. And the best thing about making your own toys is that you can choose colors and patterns to match your dog’s décor or your home’s. In addition, you can choose materials and textures your dog likes, which is perfect for the "picky” toy dog.
Standard Squeaky Toy
First up, is a standard squeaker put inside some fabric to make a simple toss toy. I like to use a wool-like fabric as my Sheltie puppy LOVES anything furry or "sheeplike.” You can put the same fabric on both sides, or for more variety, put different fabric on each side, it’s up to you!
- One squeaker – you can purchase extra squeakers at the pet store, or use ones from old toys are that worn out
- 2 small pieces of fabric – at least 6” square
- Needle and thread (or a sewing machine)
How to make a Squeaky Dog Toy
Step 1. Cut out two circles of fabric each with approximately 4.5” diameters
Step 2. Sandwich the squeaker in-between the wrong sides of the fabric, pin the edges together
Step 3. Sew around the edges to seal in the squeaker. Do at least two or 3 rows of stitching to reinforce
You are done!
No-Sew Squeaker Tug
This is a favorite of my pup and its fun because once you have the basics down, you can do all sorts of things, like braid three strands together, tie one into a circle, attach to another toy, etc. The sky’s the limit!
- Fleece Fabric – 8” wide and as long as you want, mine shown is 36”
- Squeakers – I used 3, but you can use as many or as few as you want
- Optional: Non-toxic glue or needle and thread
How to Make a No-Sew Fleece Squeaker Tug Toy
Step 1. Knot one end of the fleece. If you want, you can leave a "tail”
Step 2. Wrap a squeaker inside the long fleece end. Make sure you tug sides in, or the squeaker will fall out
Step 3. Tie a tight knot right underneath the squeaker. If it’s too loose, the squeaker will fall out
TIP: If you have a dog that tugs really hard, you can glue (or sew) the squeakers inside the fleece. Just make sure you use a non-toxic glue.
Step 4. Continue Steps 2 and 3 for as many squeakers you want or however long you want. I left a long tail at the end of mine. You can do the same, or have squeakers the entire length.
Get out some scrap fabric, gather your friends, and have a dog toy party. Not only is it fun for you, but your dog will love testing your new creations.
