Imagine a blind person being dropped off in the middle of an unfamiliar city, perhaps Manhattan, and left to find her own way, aided by a guide dog. Today the visually impaired are gaining unprecedented ability to travel confidently, even in new and unfamiliar situations, thanks to innovative GPS technology and training being pioneered by Leader Dogs for the Blind. Working with Kapsys, a French technology company, Leader Dogs has developed a voice-directed GPS device the size of an iPod nano that is a new high-tech guidance tool for the sight impaired.
