The versatile Bouvier des Flandres serves and protects.
Max doesn’t mind company, but he does mind company that doesn’t act the way it should. “When Max was 2 years old, we had friends over, and we were playing cards in the kitchen,” recalls Nancy Eilks of Lake Mills, Wis., past president of the American Bouvier des Flandres Club. “Our friend, who was a dog show person, decided to see what the dog was really made of.”
Eilks’ guest decided to try going upstairs, just to see what would happen. “He got to the landing, and there was Max,” Eilks says. The Bouvier didn’t growl or bark. He stood his ground, refusing to let the so-called intruder pass. “Every time he tried to take a step, Max just quietly showed his teeth,” she says. “Our guest came back to the kitchen and informed us, approvingly, that there was no way he was going to get up our stairs.”
