Unusual in appearance but steadfast of heart, the Chinese Shar-Pei is a devoted guardian and loving companion.
Hold the wrinkle cream — in Chinese Shar-Pei circles, wrinkles are definitely in.
At first glance, you might only see wrinkles, especially in a Shar-Pei puppy. But add a short, prickly coat, blue-black tongue and mouth, and a "hippopotamus" muzzle, and you have a dog whose appearance is unlike any other.
The Shar-Pei's characteristic scowl and aloof, regal bearing add a dash of Oriental mystique, but the intelligent, independent breed has working roots. He was used for centuries as an all-purpose farm dog in the Chinese countryside, serving as hunter, herder, fighter, and guardian of home and family.
