Chew-Proof Dog Toys

Got a serious chewer? View a photo slide show of 10 chew-resistant dog toys built to last.

By DeAnn Welker

Finding the right dog toy for your habitual chewer can be a challenge. There are so many options available in various shapes, sizes, and prices. Here are 10 dog toys that are fun and tough enough to keep your chewer occupied.

Dogzilla
Dogzilla chews, available in three shapes and four sizes, are tough, durable dog toys to keep your chewer busy and happy. The chicken scent and flavor infused into the product’s rubber entice your dog to nibble, while the chew-resistant material helps the toy last.
    • From $8.99, from Booda; 303-375-1001

Bristle Bone
The Bristle Bone is so many chew toys in one that it’s hard to find something more suitable to almost all chewing behavior. It has hard, durable bone ends for tough chewing, with nylon bristles and rubber nubs in the middle for a softer — but still durable — chewing experience. The toy also has Gnawhide treat rings securely attached in the middle, enhancing your dog’s chewing experience.
    • From $20 for Bristle Bone and Gnawhide treats, from Busy Buddy; 800-933-5595

Extreme Kong
To many dog owners, the words “Kong” and “durable chew” just go naturally together, and with good reason. The chews are durable and long-lasting, and the Extreme Kong is the best of the bunch. It’s used by police and military K9 units — and you just know those dogs are stress chewers. So it should be able to withstand your dog’s chewing habit.
    • From $7, available in various sizes, from Kong; 303-216-2626

Double Action Chew
Combining long-lasting chewing action with breath-freshening peppermint, this dog toy works well for powerful chewers. Made by Nylabone, it has a soft, mint-flavored center with durable ends for the toughest chewers.
    • From $8.99, available in various sizes, from Nylabone; 800-631-2188

Hearty Chew
This dog toy offers the best of both worlds — rope and rubber — to keep chewers occupied. It’s durable and safe, and easily rinses clean after use, making a great toy for inside or outside chewing. This chew is best for small breeds and puppies. Petstages makes chews that are right for dogs of virtually every age and breed, so read the product specifications.
    • From $8.99, from Petstages; 847-504-4010

Orbee-Tuff Sport 8-Ball
Planet Dog offers this chew-enduring dog version of the Magic 8 Ball. It will entertain you dog for hours because of its shape and durable Orbee-Tuff material. A round, hollow ball ranks highest on Planet Dog’s chew-o-meter, and the 8-Ball is a fun choice.
    • $9.95, from Planet Dog; 800-381-1516

Everlasting Treat Ball
The Everlasting Treat Ball is designed to challenge dogs of any size. Filled with treats or food and then topped with an Everlasting Treat, this toy lasts and lasts. Once the Everlasting Treat is gone, you can add another for long-term chewing satisfaction. The Everlasting Treat Ball is dishwasher safe and available in various sizes.
    • From $12.99, from StarMark Pet Products; 877-823-7847

Mega Ring
Tuffy’s14-inch Mega Ring is as tough as a cloth chew toy can get — and that’s quite tough. The Mega Ring is made using seven layers of material and seven rows of stitching to withstand even the toughest chewers. Your dog can use the Mega Ring as a flying disc, or as a tug toy.
    • $27.50, from Tuffy’s; 480-704-1700

Hurley
The Hurley, from West Paw Design, is made of the company’s patented material Zogoflex, designed to be pliable yet durable. West Paw believes in the product so much, it’s guaranteed to last. Top it off, the company produces almost no waste in the making of its products.
    • From $9.50, from West Paw Design; 406-585-0505

Monkey’s Fist Knot Rope Toy
What makes this rope knot different from others is its heft. It’s made of tough cotton tied into a thick, heavy knot that even the most aggressive chewers won’t wear out easily. Best of all, it’s one of the most affordable chew toys.
    • From $0.99, from Zanies; 800-638-5754

I have had the best luck with Kong & Nylabone. My lab loved them and I now have a Pitbull mix that is an intense chewer/shredder. Nothing of the fabric/rope varieties stands a chance, and even rawhides (large ones) only last a matter of minutes to hours. So it's hard to find a stimulating variety of toys for my younger dog. I haven't tried all these brands, because I can usually tell it will be a waste of money. But I will happily vouch for Kong & Nylabone. She's had the same ones for months of those, but still manages to rip pieces off with her front teeth.

Wow, what an idiotic compilation. I hope you didn't pay that "author" for this article. Jeez...

Great list! I can vouch for the Mega Ring, Hurley, & Orbee-Tuff. I have three aggressive chewers and they have a hard time making a dent in any of those.

You can usually get a good deal on them at http://www.dogtuff.com
